Honored to participate in the Council for Court Excellence’s panel on emerging challenges for the District’s legal system. With representation from all three branches of our government, it was a fascinating conversation on the administration of justice in DC.

Interesting: Per the @CCE_for_DC, the population in the D.C. Jail's Central Detention Facility has gone up over the last week, which aligns with the increased arrests by federal enforcement officers deployed in the city.

can pretty much extrapolate everything you need to know about the legal framework and realities of carceral data availability from this ongoing situation with deaths-in-custody reporting ⬇️
Major update in @theappeal's FOIA lawsuit seeking to compel the federal Department of Justice to release records on in-custody deaths in prisons, jails, and police custody. 🧵

“There hasn’t been much conversation around how do we, as adults, help improve their outcomes so that they don’t engage in crime and they don’t go deeper into the system.” CCE's Tracy Velazquez talks about our newest report on DC's #crossoveryouth: buff.ly/3yH1s4y

New article on the new jail funding debate by @jennygathright. We hope DC leaders will move quickly & collaboratively to replace crumbling, unsafe jail. It must be a community-led project & those whose lives are most impacted should be centered in planning.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/…

CCE analysis of DC's NIBRS police data shows 365 reported incidents of theft between $500 and $999 in 2022. More prison and jail time for stealing items like a phone is a very expensive approach shown not to work. (3/3)

Please read the @DCJusticeLab's analysis of the Omnibus Crime Bill. If the Council of the District of Columbia enacts it as written, it will make DC less safe.
Under @CMBrookePinto's draft Secure DC bill: If a person is being chased by the police and they are ordered to drop the gun…it will be illegal for them to drop the gun. Time to redraft. Read more. dcjusticelab.org/wp-content/…

Probation is meant to be an alternative to incarceration. However, many agencies lack resources to supervise those with mental health disorders—potentially increasing the chance this overrepresented population ends up in prison anyway. States can help. pew.org/496BlB1
