A lovely poem for world prematurity day yesterday, illustrating how this can understandably be such a time of mixed feelings 🩵
Today is World Prematurity Day. Sending love to the little heroes born too soon and their families too. #WorldPrematurityDay #WorldPrematurityDay2024

This is such a lovely example of serve and return. It is so important in our little ones’ journey of learning. Remember to pause to allow them the space to copy or reply ❤️

I only have eyes for you, Dad. 👀 Take a moment to admire not only this sweet “serve and return” conversation between this father and daughter - but the completely unbroken eye contact they share. Eye contact is an important early developmental milestone for your baby and key to strengthening attachment during infancy. So carve out time for regular face-to-face interaction. This eight-week-old is in a particular sweet spot on the eye contact front, as newborns’ vision tends to take on greater clarity and focus between 6-10 weeks. Suddenly see can see dad’s face in detail and doesn’t want to miss a single second. What a sweet duo. (Note that if your baby is not making regular eye contact by 2-3 months of age, it’s worth bringing this to the attention of your pediatrician - as this may be a sign of a vision issue or other developmental concern.) Lovely to see the fun this family are having and the understanding of this little one 🥰

Check out this little comedian. 🥸 Not long ago I fielded a question about how to interpret a newborn’s smiles and laughter - noting that (at three days old) these behaviors were probably more reflexive than intentional. In doing so, I also made a promise: that meaningful smiles and laughter would be just around the corner. And that once they arrive you really couldn’t miss them. Which brings us to this little joker. You only get a quick glimpse of the game he’s playing with his grandfather, but what you’re watching is the pair using rapid changes in their facial expressions to make one another laugh. And boy, is it effective! Watch as our hero goes from delighted to completely straight faced at the drop of a hat. His serious face makes grandpa laugh and this brings out some of the biggest baby grins you’ll ever see. It’s clear that this little guy is engaging in humor on purpose - and takes real pleasure in making his family laugh. He’s just the right age as well. At about 9 months, babies begin developing “theory of mind” - or the ability to begin envisioning a situation from the viewpoint of another. I’d say he has a pretty good sense of what will make his grandpa guffaw. Wouldn’t you agree? This amazingly expressive little guy was shared to IG by thatbabyluv.

Parenting interventions which focus on responsive relationships rather than just on behavioural techniques have quadruple the effect on a range of positive outcomes. It’s not one or the other, but “relationships first” is the secret sauce.
One for commissioners: parenting interventions that include content on responsive caregiving have x4 greater effects on child cognitive development, parenting knowledge & practices, parent–child interactions than interventions that do not #WHOOOSH dx.plos.org/10.1371/journal.…

Great resource you can work through in your own time, to learn more about how your child might be viewing the world, including those who have just started school 🎒

“What’s this?!” A new mom reached out yesterday, requesting an explanation of that phase “when toddlers start pointing at everything, wondering what it’s called” - and noting that it’s her 13-month-old’s current obsession. So absolutely, let’s talk about it! First can we just acknowledge how AMAZING it is to be a 13-month-old? As a general rule of thumb, two things are happening for children around this age: 1) After a year of almost total dependence, they have unlocked the secret to mobility (taking their first steps and walking on their own), and 2) They are exploding into spoken language, growing both their expressive and receptive vocabulary each and every day. And then there’s the wonderment. Two weeks ago my family and I visited the Grand Canyon for the first time. And it was just breathtaking. I’d never seen anything remotely like it. As adults we don’t often have those kinds of experiences anymore. We’ve been there and done that. But toddlers have mind-blowing experiences every day as they encounter the world for the first time. It’s just magical. What’s more, consider the amazing conceptual learning here. Toddlers are learning that everything has a name of its own. And they NEED to know the names. All of them. So get ready! Because your toddler’s vocabulary is about to grow exponentially - just like little Bonnie’s here, who’s using the occasion of a nature walk to expand her own linguistic database. Thank you for sharing this research @grahammusic1 It's great to know about the many ways in which intervening early with parent child psychotherapy can be so beneficial!🧬
important study showing that parent child psychotherapy can reduce so many later problems, even cellular ageing..... So lets intervene early! zurl.co/C7wl

Great reminder to celebrate the new movements your baby makes 🥳 Noticing when your baby does something new is a great way for you to bond, as you watching them as they learn and encouraging them along the way helps them feel cared for 🥰

Tummy time, crawling & walking may not be Olympic sports but for babies & toddlers they represent big milestones worth celebrating! 🥇 Each one is a stepping stone to the next & offers new opportunities to move, stretch out & discover the world! Next stop: LA 2028! #Olympics

Parenting can often feel like being on a rollercoaster, especially during the Summer Holidays! It's possible to feel overwhelmed with love one minute & then like you need a break the next. It's completely normal to face difficulties along the way. Remember you are not alone. đź’ś

Such a great video shared by @DanWuori of a lovely serve and return interaction between a baby and their dad 🥰 even simple interactions like this can make the world of difference to your baby 💚
19 Aug 2024
Hey! I can do that too! Over the years I’ve shared dozens of wonderful examples of serve and return interactions, in which infants and their parents engage in back and forth verbal communication. But this turn taking and mimicry isn’t limited to spoken language. Get a load of this father and son, who are mirroring one another’s physical movements as they lay together on the bed. Our hero is ready to roll and dad is here model the movement and help him put in the reps. Just fantastic! This lovely video - which is labeled “playing games with my dad” in Turkish, was shared to IG by dyguckr.
