Many years ago @justinkagin conjured up a great research idea, invested in the necessary connections, and ultimately produce a fantastic dissertation on the economics of religiosity among the Roma. After a long incubation period, thrilled to see a core idea in print.

Using an IV strategy, we find that parental religious engagement improves child educational outcomes in Roma families and provide evidence that this may be due to improved integration and mainstreamed norms: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…. Many offered feedback over many years. Thanks!

Great to see this out - largely due to Kajal's persistence over almost a decade of fieldwork, analysis and writing. Thrilled with @AJAE_AAEA as an outlet...an excellent match!

Thanks @michelson_hope for leading this charge! So much promising work related to ag input quality - some of it correcting early missteps as methods migrated into economics. Here's hoping the review indeed guides research in positive directions!

Thanks @Oxford_CSAE for hosting! A great discussion with excellent suggestions. And all with spring snow flurries outside! @UniofOxford is an extraordinary place in any weather - but dusted in snow? Wow...

In order for a farmer to optimise the agricultural production of crops, they first have to know something about the genetic properies of the seeds they're sowing. @TravisLybbert discusses work using genotyping in Ethiopia at the last CSAE Lunchtime Seminar of term.

The combination of science, politics, data, and great research collaborators (Enid Katungi @BiovIntCIAT_eng @stevenson_j_r @cgiarspia ) and policy partners (@MAAIF_Uganda) have made this a fascinating project. Important emerging insights to correct some misleading evidence.
Seed system failures can compromise farmers’ productivity and resilience. See how @TravisLybbert @ucdavisCAES is conducting a comprehensive study of the maize and bean seed value chain in Uganda to strengthen seed system resilience: bit.ly/3D562Ju @FeedtheFuture

After a long gestation, it is great to see this paper in JDE with @etjernst, Sam, Michael, Mary and Tim! So many interesting twists along the way, including the engagement with @Acumen & chats with breeders about new advances & seed system implications. authors.elsevier.com/c/1f4Dn…

Here's the @wineecon article that prompted the episode. Incidentally, the paper provided a great unexpected opportunity to reconnect with @KarlStorchmann after crossing paths in Florida nearly 20 years back! cup.org/3JyWs1U

Fun chatting with @DarianWoods @theindicator from @planetmoney about this project and hearing the @RexPickett story. And such a cool collaboration with sharp @UCDavisARE MS students! How Hollywood changed the US wine industry npr.org/2022/02/16/108127668…

A talented team of MS students and I published a Sideways Supply Response paper @wineecon. @_cingraham rebranded it with panache. I love Giamatti - why didn't I think of that title!?

Are smaller agro-ecological niches—especially those populated by poorer farmers—underserved by conventional seed systems? Evidence from western Kenya in this study with coauthors reveals locally-adapted varieties can substantially boost farmer incomes. tinyurl.com/e45ke94v

Long ago, @etjernst and I puzzled over how to make impenetrable soil test reports accessible to average Kenyan farmers. Decided to borrow from video games and virtual reality. With co-authors, we show how these tools can facilitate learning in JEBO authors.elsevier.com/c/1dMmo…

Learning by (virtually) doing: Experimentation and belief updating in smallholder agriculture... An interactive app enables farmers to discover the returns to different inputs on a virtual farm that is calibrated to resemble their own.

Farmers update both their beliefs and their behaviors after engaging with the virtual learning app...we show that farmers with the highest predicted returns to lime—an unfamiliar input in this region—increase their lime orders more than others.

After 3 glorious days offline in Desolation Wilderness (sounds more like purgatory, I know, but it is truly glorious), I was shocked to learn about President Moise. My thoughts and prayers with many great Haitian friends and colleagues and with @claudejoseph03.

Great to see this work with Mariam Gharib, @LeahPalmForster and @kent_messer, appear in @_Food_Policy. For as much as farmers (and local media) tend to complain about fake seeds, shocking that they only try to read packaging signals when trained to do so! sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Coincidentally, the article appeared online almost exactly the same day as this Dev Impact blog posted on the same broad topic. So nice to be engaged with so many awesome collaborators on important questions. blogs.worldbank.org/impactev…

Last year, my colleague/coauthor Ed Taylor and I published the 3rd Edition of our Intro to Dev Econ textbook with @ucpress. We explain the logic of this unconventional book and why we teach it the way we do in this blog post: ucpress.edu/blog/53946/why-w…
