ALT This is the era of renter power. A pair of hands holding up a book with the TTU logo above a collage of apartments, townhomes, and mobile homes, as well as the skyline of downtown Raleigh, NC.
ALT How it is now: A hand labeled "The Landlord" is about to strike a group of mobile homes, labeled "the tenants." Nobody knows each other. Problems don't get resolved. Management can pick off anyone they don't like (or don't want). People who have no issues think their neighbors don't either.
ALT How it can be: A large group of raised fists loom over the mobile homes, labeled "the tenant union." The fists scare away the hand labeled "the landlord." Everyone meets regularly and shares what's going on. When there's a problem, everyone comes together to make sure it gets fixed. Management has no choice but to accept demands.
ALT How to make it happen: 1. Talk to your neighbors. Ask: "If you could change one thing about living here, what would it be?" 2. Find your leaders Who is good at talking with people? Who has the free time to spend on this? 3. Make your demands. What issues do the most people have? What issues are the easiest to fix? 4. Inoculate. What are the consequences of organizing? What are the consequences of not organizing? 5. Action! How will you win these demands? How can you get everyone involved?
We finally got our act together and put the Barbie edition shirts on the website. The memes may be over but stomping out slumlords will always be in style! stompoutslumlords.org/shop/
Our canvass crew braved the rain today and spoke to tenants in Raleigh sick of yearly rent hikes, disrepair, pests and mold, and feeling powerless in their own apartments. A mass working class movement of tenants is the only way we can fight the landlord class!
Want to join us next time? Or do you want to organize your own neighborhood or apartment complex? Join us here and an onboarding organizer will be in touch with you soon: triangletenantunion.org/join
Canvassing is how our union develops organizing leads , and how we conduct inquiry into the issues facing working class tenants. It is essential in order for us to build mass tenant-led organization in NC!
