Words fail me at this point. I am completely heartbroken and devastated to hear about Zakir Bhai. Ustad Zakir Hussain was a phenomenon. He was indeed one of the most loved musicians the world saw.

Robert Lucas is no more. Though most famous for the eponymous Lucas Critique, his most quoted sentence is from a 1988 paper — On the Mechanics of Economic Development. And, interestingly, he wrote that sentence in the context of Indian economic underperformance.

I'm no Bayern fan, but at least I can trot out my comparison of PSG to a big firm within an overprotected and uncompetitive domestic market, dominant at home but unable to succeed abroad. 2023 out in R16 2022 R16 2021 SF 2020 lost in F after single-leg QF, SF 2019 R16 2018 R16

Morocco beat France 4 to 2, which was not expected. Humiliated, a year later General Nogues (France’s resident general in Morocco) introduced a law that “all Muslim teams need to have a least three players who are French citizens”. Turns out, colonial football teams…

Good policy that should be copied 2 of 6: Dutch cycling. It's not just about infrastructure, laws matter too. The Dutch assume that any collision between a car and a bike is the car's fault, unless proven otherwise. That changes the behaviour of motorists.

Thank you @D_A_Irwin for a fantastic look at 75 years of the GATT/WTO, 200 yrs of efforts to shape global econ integration, & why we'll miss the multilateral trading system a lot if it erodes. Lester Thurow in 1990: GATT is dead. Rudi Dornbusch: it's not dead, it's just resting.

An Econ Nobel for the FDR administration: Diamond & Dybvig showed banks vulnerable to panics - and deposit insurance can help. @FDICgov created in 1933. Bernanke's pre-Fed research showed deflationary gold standard, bank failures made Depression worse. US went off gold in 1933.
