Thank you NOAA Sea Grants @UWiscSeaGrant @ILINSeaGrants and BlueSky-MichSeaGrant for funding this work and kickstarting a great multi-university collaboration.
NOAA's Great Lakes Environmental Laboratory @NOAA_GLERL is an amazing laboratory full of brilliant scientists who work incredibly hard to help preserve the Great Lakes as a resource for generations of future Americans.
I'm excited to promote our new Great Lakes ice prediction model paper in J. Hydrology. The model rivals the accuracy of traditional physics-based models. Congrats to Dr. Hazem Abdelhady on this great work. Read for free here: authors.elsevier.com/a/1kD3H…
Announcing Call for Papers for a special section in Journal of Great Lakes Research on #GreatLakes Coastal Processes. Accepting submissions Oct 1, 2023 – March 31, 2024. See bit.ly/3ReR631
Great meeting of the Indiana Water Resources Association @WaterIndiana this week at Purdue!! Our lab presented findings on #LakeMichigan shoreline erosion...Takeaway from our recently submitted paper: recent erosion could have been worse, believe it or not!
ALT During 1998-2013, waves and water levels were low, allowing the shoreline to rebuild substantially. Between 2013 and 2020, the Indiana shoreline eroded significantly. The net, however, was that the shoreline generally gained sand between 1998-2020, believe it or not!
Congratulations to Hazem Usama Abdelhady, winner of the 2023 IAGLR Scholarship. Researching #GreatLakes shoreline changes from rapid water level fluctuations @TroyLab_Purdue @PurdueCE
#USACEChicago is proud to host the Great Lakes Engineering with Nature Playbook Workshop, as professionals and industry leaders gather together to integrate engineering with nature concepts as part of the overall Great Lakes Costal Resiliency Study!
Here's a cool video for #FlumeFriday... an experiment I did ages ago during my Ph.D. for fun with Jeff Koseff but is just now seeing the light of day it deserves. Just submitted it to this year's Gallery of Fluid Motion at the upcoming APS meeting. youtu.be/onVu-inwAFU
Community Scientists Recover Micrometeorites from Lake Michigan - Eos eos.org/articles/community-s… Really cool story about a community science effort in Lake Michigan. Those kids must have been stoked when they realized what they found!!
Lake Michigan Upwelling - Michigan Coast
Simulations by my student Sultan Ahmed a few years ago show the upwelling that is chilling so many Michigan swimmers lately! #LakeMichigan#Upwellingyoutu.be/kr-TEqy_tO0
Great day of microstructure profiling on Lake Michigan, trying to quantify turbulent mixing rates before stratification sets in. ~2km of hand-pulled profiles!! Beautiful weather (for April) and fingers crossed that the data cooperate...#LakeMichigan@RSI_Turbulence @PurdueCE
Our new paper - congrats to grad student Hazem Abdelhady!

Always great donning the Santa suits this time of year in the name of Lake Michigan science! Unless the suit leaks profusely…. But the data rocks! Last microstructure of 2021 around these parts. Happy holidays everyone! @RSI_Turbulence@ILINSeaGrant @PurdueCE
First week of classes under our collective belts here at #Purdue. Lots of great energy on campus this semester! Hoping we can stick to in-person classes for the whole semester.
A Battle Between a Great City and a Great Lake nytimes.com/interactive/2021… Fascinating article on how a "dialed-in" Chicago lakefront is not ready for the extreme fluctuations in water levels that climate change may bring.
