Every year in the UK approximately 2.6 million cattle, 10 million pigs, 14.5 million sheep and lambs, 80 million fish and 950 million birds are slaughtered for human consumption. That's over one billion animals in the U.K. alone.
In response to #Veganuary, the dairy industry is launching #Februdairy in an attempt to save their dying industry. Each day of Feb, I’m going to be tweeting realities that the industry would rather remain hidden.
Day 1: Farmers exchange advice on how to control misbehaving cows:
Every year in the UK alone 40 million male chicks are killed in the egg industry.
The most common method, also considered the most humane, is to drop the chicks into a mechanical macerator whilst still conscious.
Despite the label, many apparently free range chickens in the UK will never spend any time outdoors. Current laws allow farms to house "free range" chickens in cramped barns of up to 16,000 birds per building with just 1m of space for every 9 birds.
Day 2:
Having bonded, the calf & mother are separated, never to see each other again. Both will scream out for days. Bystanders have described the pain in the mother’s cry as the most horrifying thing they have ever witnessed.
UK pig farmers have lodged an official complaint to the ASA claiming the figures used in the @vivacampaigns advert are inaccurate, despite evidence having been provided by the charity to back up all claims made.

Due to ineffectiveness with electric stunning, it is conservatively estimated that 30-40,000 turkeys enter the scalding tank alive where they then boil to death. To combat this many turkeys are now gassed - a painful and panic inducing slaughter method.
