Enough basketball. Time for some football talk.
I do believe that UVA baaketball bringing back experience is an advantage. As I sit here and watch some of last season's games. Especially in the tournament. I know Johan was injured but I could tell that the stage was a little tu big for him at times. The same goes for Da Ridder for the most part. He had a few good games but he wasn't consistently himself. Both of those guys played a lot of basketball before coming here. But they never played college basketball. Let alone in a Power 4 conference. That's a major adjustment that people over looked. Despite averaging more points here. He averaged more minutes here. I think if he avgeraged more minutes back home. His sciring average would surpass what he avg last season at UVA. The physicality, speed, scouting, and nightly competition in a Power 4 league are different. In my truth, he probably shouldn't have been First or Second Team All-ACC. Even though I'm happy he received the recognition. I personally had a few other players ahead of him. Getting back tu UVA and experience, I'm watching the championship game against Duke and Johann was dominated by Duke's frontcourt. Da Ridder struggled against DUKE bigs tu. When I say big men. I'm talking about Boozer. Ugo was the one who kept us in that game. Another thing people forget is that outside of Hall. Almost nobody on the roster had experience playing at this level. Most of those guys were experiencing Power 4 basketball for the first time. They were learning on the fly while also trying tu compete against some of the best teams in the country. For some reason, Hall wasn't the player I thought he was going tu be. He was almost a Jontel-type player with size. He had no J also. I honestly didn't know he couldn't shoot. At the very least. I thought he was an average shooter. I really believed he was a good shooter because that's what we all talked about heading intu the season was that everybody on the floor could shoot. That's why I think this year is different. UVA is bringing back experience, and experience matters. Johan, DaRidder, Lewis, and several others now know what it takes tu compete on this level. They've been through the ups and downs. They've played on the big stage and they've felt the disappointment of falling short. Those lessons are valuable. Last year, a lot of these guys were talented but inexperienced in college basketball. This year, they won't be seeing these environments, opponents, and expectations for the first time. I also think there's a different mentality with this group now. There's a sense of purpose and urgency. These guys want redemption. They know they left some opportunities on the table last season and they want tu prove they're better than what they showed at times. More importantly, they understand that this group may only have one more year tugether. DaRidder Johann and Lewis might not be back next season. So there's a real understanding that this could be their last run as a unit. Teams that play with that kind of motivation can be dangerous. I still want that wing. I don't know where they're going tu get one now. Since the wing I heard about is apparently gone. There's still one more player out there, but I haven't heard anything new about him lately.

Im tired of hearing the media talk about DUKE and Kentucky. Its corny and boring. I call that lazy Journalism. Tu is going tu do something more interesting and harder. Tu is going tu discuss his top mid major schools for this upcoming season! 1. VCU – Great fan support, solid NIL backing, strong facilities, and a winning culture put them at the top of my list. The Rams are still one of the best schools and always find a way tu compete 2. Gonzaga – one of the premier mid majors in the country with excellent recruiting and player development. With all the changes in college They remains a national brand that can fight with anyone. 3. Saint Mary's – Tough, disciplined and always well coached. Randy Bennett has built one of the most dependable programs in college and they keep winning through player development and continuity. 4. Dayton – Amazing fan base and plenty of talent. They have one of the best home courts in the sport and continue tu bring in quality players. 5. High Point – They've invested heavily in basketball and are gaining momentum fast. They're not the school anymore when their name comes up. You say WHO! 6. Grand Canyon – Strong support, great facilities and solid recruiting. They have become a legitimate contender with a passionate fan base and growing national attention. 7. McNeese – Athletic, fearless and playing with a ton of swag. Their recent success has changed expectations and made them a team nobody wants tu face. 8. Liberty – Keeps winning through discipline and experience. Ex UVA assistant has built a program that stays competitive year after year. Great Job! 9. Utah State – Ask Ryan Odom. One of the most successful schools that always seem tu reload and stay in the mix. 10. Santa Clara – Quietly turning intu a strong program. Better recruiting and steady development have helped them keep climbing. 11. Yale – Smart, fundamentally sound and consistently wins. Yale continues tu show what good coaching and development can do! 12. Belmont – Always competitive and has a strong culture. Their focus on team ball and fundamentals keeps them relevant. 13. College of Charleston – Talented program with rising expectations. They have proven they can recruit, develop players and compete for titles. 14. Akron – A winner that probably doesn't get enough credit. Their success in conference play speaks for itself. 15. Drake – Strong culture and sustained success. They have earned a lot of respect across the Midwest. 16. UNC Wilmington – A program that's clearly trending upward. Continued improvement and solid recruiting have them in a good spot moving forward. 17. Bradley – Tough, physical and overlooked. They bring defensive intensity and a competitive edge every time they step on the court. 18. Loyola Chicago – Strong foundation and a proven track record of development. They've shown they can compete on a national stage. 19. North Texas – Their elite defense keeps them in just about every game. That identity allows them tu hang with teams that may have more talent on paper. 20. Nevada-has the resources and history tu be successful. They remain a respected program with room tu move even higher. 21. UC San Diego – One of the fastest rising programs around. Their overall growth and structure made them a team worth watching. 22. James Madison – Getting better year after year. They continue tu build momentum and establish themselves as a reliable winner. 23. Princeton – Smart, experienced and dangerous. Their style of play and IQ make them a tough matchup for anyone. 24. Furman – Well coached and always prepared. They get the most out of their talent and compete at a high level. 25. Northern Iowa – Reliable and consistently competitive. Their long history of success earns them a spot on Tu's list. I almost added San Francisco and UC IRVINE. UVA fans should know why. LOL

When fans talk about the players UVA lost over the last couple of years. I don't think enough people talk about Anthony Robinson. Anthony came tu UVA as a true developmental project. He wasn't a finished product. He wasn't one of those players who arrived on Grounds ready tu dominate the ACC. Tu be honest, its very rare a UVA freshman big comes in teady tu dominate. Which is the surface for my post? Tony Bennett, Mike Curtis, and the staff took their time with him. They redshirted him, developed his body, improved his conditioning, and helped him understand what it took tu play high-level college basketball. By the time he finally got on the course. He looked like a completely different player from the one who first arrived at UVA. This young BULL looked like it was sculpted. Then everything changed for UVA. Tony Bennett's retirement right before the season created a difficult situation for everyone involved. Players came tu UVA expecting tu play for a Hall of Fame coach. All of nowhere they were dealing with uncertainty only weeks before the season started. Coach Sanchez, Coach Williford, and the rest of the staff did everything they could tu keep the program tugether but it was a tough year for the coaches, the players, and the fans. What always stood out tu me about AR was that he never seemed concerned about being a star. He embraced his role. He worked and waited for his turn. He continued tu develop. When his opportunities came. He gave UVA toughness, size, rebounding, shot blocking, and physical play around the basket. He wasn't flashy, but he was productive. He gave you effort every possession and brought an element of strength that every good college team needs. Plus he was a team first player!!! That's why I've always believed Anthony would have been a perfect fit for this year's roster. UVA doesn't need another star big man behind Johan. They need reliability and experience. They need somebody who understands college basketball and understands physical play. AR can come intu the game for 12 tu 15 minutes without the game being affected. AR checked every one of those boxes. He can finish through contact. He can rebound in traffic. He can alter and block shots. He can defensively make opponents think twice about attacking the rim. He even started showing the ability tu step away from the basket and knock down low post moves. His game was still growing. Which is what made him so intriguing. Unfortunately, things never really clicked for him at Xavier. Injuries and other setbacks got in the way, and sometimes a player just never finds the same comfort level he had at his previous school. That's part of college basketball now. In my truth, AR would have given this roster something it currently lacks. He is an experienced big man who understands the program and has accepted his role. Instead of asking a freshman tu learn on the fly behind a soph in Johan. You would have had a battle tested big man who already knew about college basketball! Maybe it was never realistic. MAYBE he didnt feel wanted when Odom took over. What I do know is AR loved UVA. He loved being a student and loved representing the program. When I look at this roster today. I still think he would have been one of the best and safest backup center options available. Sometimes the best addition isn't the flashy new name. Sometimes it's the player who already knows his role and is willing tu do the dirty work to help a team win. AR is a team first player and not having a big like AR tu backup Johan is going tu kick UVA in the nuutts. F

When I look at UVA's roster. I still think the biggest need is a long wing who can defend multiple positions and consistently knock down perimeter shots. If Odom finds that player. This team becomes much more dangerous. I like what Jan Vide brings as a big playmaker. I watched Kalu and let me say this. I wont do a review because it would be bad and I dont want tu do that. I will say that he is a poor Akil Mitchell type. Meaning he has Akil skills but not at the same level, and I watched four games. Let's hope this year off elevated his game. What I don't know yet is who becomes that reliable wing player. Jan Vide may end up being one of the steals of the offseason. The size, ball handling, vision, and toughness are ACC-caliber traits. If the three-point shot improves. He could be much more than a backup point guard. But that's a huge if. Odom has one more move left. One player isnt available and I dont know what is up with the other tu. UVA needs a veteran wing with size. That's the piece that could elevate UVA from a solid ACC team tu a team capable of making real noise in March. FACTS

After watching multiple games of Jan Vide in the FIBA U21 and LMU games. Thank you, Coach Marks, for all the game videos in Jan. I've concluded that he may be the reserve point guard UVA needs. But his biggest question mark and it could become a big one, is his three-point shooting. The form looks good. He squares up, follows through, and the ball comes off his hand clean. The percentages aren't where you want them tu be. But mechanically, the shot doesn't look broken at all. I think he will bring His percentages are up. What jumped out tu me immediately was his size. Jan looks every bit of 6-foot-6. UVA needed a bigger gard who could handle the ball, play next tu Chance, and give the offense another creator. Jan checks those boxes. His handle is legit. Not good for a big guard but COLD. Everyone knows I love Ty. Jan handles are better. He dont see the floor like Ty but he drops dimes. You can tell he is a natural point gard because he is always looking tu make the right read. He keeps his head up, sees the floor, and throws passes that create easy opportunities for teammates. He doesn't just move the ball around the perimeter. He attacks defenses and forces them to react. What I really like is how strong he is with the basketball. He gets downhill. He gets intu the paint. He absorbs contact. He finishes with either hand, has a nice floater package, and isn't afraid tu challenge bigger players around the rim A lot of gards can dribble. A lot of gards can pass. Not many have his combination of size, strength, ball handling, and vision. The thing that surprises me most is that he lasted as long as he did in the portal. For UVA tu land him in May is a huge credit tu Ryan Odom and the staff. People kept saying, "Relax, Odom will find somebody." After watching three or four of his FIBA games and a couple of LMU games. I have tu admit they may have been right. Jan rebounds, pushes the fast break and can start the offense himself without needing someone else tu bring the ball up. He plays with confidence, swagger, and emotion. He talks sheit during games. He celebrates big plays. He doesn't mind going back and forth with opponents. Some players try tu hide from the moment. Jan looks like he enjoys it. He plays with an edge tu him that UVA fans are going tu appreciate and opponents hate. He is a DUKE type of hate and I love it!! One of the biggest things for me was finding a backup point gard with size who could also play alongside Chance. Jan gives UVA that option. I don't know yet how all of his game will translate tu the ACC. But I do know this. His handles are real. His passing is real. His toughness is real, and his ability tu get to the rim is real. Those things usually translate no matter what conference you're playing in. Jan may end up being one of the most underrated additions UVA made this season. "ON GARD".

I haven't seen the UVA Basketball facilities in person. I know it's banging. But some of it looks bland. The practice gym is whack. No color or style. The same for the indoor football practice field. It Dull. No flavor tu it. I saw this and I was knocked off my feet. I have a 6'7 thirteen year old gard who can shoot and handle. Yiur know Im big on reporting the correct height. He is 6'7 and a GARD. Im actually in the process of looking for a prep middle school for him right now. We want him away from NYC. I am going tu show him this video. I didnt know Missouri had this and I know Coach Gates. WOW!!!! youtu.be/-PnVHVm6zo8?is=2pAf…

Thank you for your truth Hans. Im going tu do my best tu be respectful. They are Hoos and I was glad tu see their moving in videos and excitement UVA doesn't need Christian and Jurian tu be stars. They just need tu fill complementary roles and raise the team talent level. If either becomes a top ACC player. That would be a bonus. After watching their recent games. I believe both still need development. Especially Christian in my truth. I observed that much of his game depends on open threes and using his strength tu drive tu the basket. That's effective, but ACC athletes present a tougher challenge. Malik Thomas dominated that conference and was Player of the Year. Harmon was solid but not at that level. Malik had a better season than I originally thought after rewatching the games. But his skill level for the ACC was average. What scares me is that Christian was solid in that same conference but not on Malik's level. Jurian mentality, competitiveness and toughness stood out tu me. He plays hard and creates contact, though I didn't consistently see elite handles, shooting or athleticism. However, if those traits translate tu the ACC, UVA could have tu valuable additions. Let's address your statement that you prefer Darren over Christian and Jurian. I love that name by the way. I never heard of it before. It's unfair for me tu sit here and say Darren will definitely be a better player than Christian or Jurian. But there are some things we do know. We know Darren can play against the Big Four and ACC competition. We know he had some good performances against ACC teams. We know he was recruited by the top programs in the country. We know he was the Virginia High School State Player of the Year and played for one of the top three high schools in the country. We know he performed well in practices, pick up games and scrimmages at DUKE We also know he was playing behind elite wing talent. One of those players won the NBA Rookie of the Year award. Tu wings were the best rookies in the NBA last season and had one of the best rookie seasons in the history of the NBA. Both players led their teams, improved them and became franchise players. We know Darren is a legitimate shooter and a player with proven high-level potential and a future. What we don't know is how Harmon or Jurian will perform against ACC competition. We don't know if Harmon is truly 6'6" or if Jurian is truly 6'5". We don't know if either one is athletic enough tu consistently excel in the ACC. We don't know if their shooting will translate against ACC defenses. Those questions still have tu be answered on the court and big stage. I want tu thank you for starting discussions like this. I'm slowly reconnecting with people and rebuilding some of my old connections. Iys hard because I dint know their twitter handle and I havent set up my DM's. In helping those, I help promote their venues. Would do the same for me. I never turned down helping anyone and this time I was compromised. As I continue doing that and start seeing who's still around and engaged. I'll be reaching out more. I hope that this platform gets back tu what it used tu be. A place where anybody and everybody can share their truth, have respectful debates, and discuss sports as a community. Thanks again, Hans. I truly appreciate you.

Looking at DeRidder. I think slimming down would serve him well. I dont know if he was that bjg at home but he appeared tu be more explosive. He was dunking everything and flying around. I think one flaw of Curtis. Many players loose their athleticism. I swesr I saw Dakliin catch a nasty oopp. I dont think he had a dunk or can dunk this year. But he got bigger of course I dont know but I can keep naming guys Wilkins and Guy.. Wilkins use tu fly around and got heavier. Guy almost won the McDbalda dunk contest. He was barely getting over the rim at UVA. I can keep going.
