In case things fall apart (even more) over here, here’s my contingency Mastodon account. I’ll start cross-posting soon. mastodon.social/@TylerLoch

I was staring blankly at a certificate expiration date for a server I maintain now. After incorporating its renewal into all my emotional baggage, I realized its expiration year. 2114. Hopefully it will be someone else's problem by then and I can stop worrying about it.

Two decades ago, my coworker and I made a 20-iMac high school video lab where all footage was stored and edited (iMovie 2) directly on a shared network volume served from an Xserve and Xserve RAID. It was so much more responsive than local ATA or FireWire disks and a joy to use.

Whelp. Seems macOS’ long-standing Network Locations feature is gone, and not coming back. Its absence in Ventura is “as designed”.

The command-line scselect tool still exists (though manual editing of SystemConfiguration.plist is NOT for humans…), so there’s a possibility this feature could still live on as a Terminal-only “featurette”. …And given its target audience, that might be just fine.

And hey, that's exactly the case! You can still use the networksetup tool to create and delete Locations in Ventura. scselect is still available, but even better, creating multiple Locations brings back the "Location" Apple submenu! droidwin.com/bring-back-miss…

This is so accurate, and so beautiful. The prevalent codecs and containers and filters may change over the decades, but FFmpeg's soul doesn't. youtube.com/watch?v=9kaIXkIm…

Random memory: Last century, I bought the Marathon Trilogy Box Set direct from @Bungie. I wasn’t old enough to buy online with credit, so I mailed in a money order. Due to the arcaneness (and me forgetting IL sales tax), they passive-aggressively sent a loose AOL CD with the box.

HotTake/Prediction: There won’t be an M2 Pro/Max/Ultra, and no 14/16” M2 MacBook Pro. Apple is going straight to M3 on a 3nm process in early 2023 for a big leap in performance and efficiency. MBP and Mac Pro are great low-volume products to try out on a low-yield new CPU node.

WATCH POCKET. Keeps other pockets unencumbered and allows for quick draw phone use. If you chose a phone that is too big to fit, you have made a mistake.

I'm sorry to report that working in Security is less "bleeding-edge malware research" and more "project manager for people who don't report to you."

I don’t know why anyone would bother with these instructions when you can simply just accidentally throw your AirPods in with the laundry every once in a while. 9to5mac.com/2022/10/07/clean…

My week has gone the opposite of how the meme normally works. But don’t worry…there’s still time to turn things around again!

I'm old enough now that people are remaking my turn-of-the-century teenage anime music videos in HD. This is going to take some time to process.

Happy Monday in late-August and/or early-September! It's that time again…
Happy back to school for the rest of the country! Watch in awe as cloud-based services forget how to scale their compute needs for the third week in a row!

Oh, I should mention it’s not always these same two services tripping over load spikes. Today, it’s Google. Next Monday, it will be something else. The Cloud works in mysterious ways.

Yes, I know AI imagery will damage the world in ways we have yet to fully comprehend…but darn it, it's so much fun to see these little artificial brains try to figure us out while simultaneously rendering us no longer necessary. youtube.com/watch?v=nyD6g47D…
