COMPETITION AND CONNECTION IN DELHI’S URDU LITERARY SCENE 1737-1743
How do we listen to literary gatherings in the past? How do lyric poetry’s formal elements reveal
competitions and connections between writers? Nathan Tabor will discuss some of the methodological
approaches used in his book City of Lyrics that allow for readers and researchers alike to revel in the
sociable environment and technical virtuosity of Delhi’s literary scene in the early 1700s. Attendees
will come away with a broader understanding of Islamicate lyrics within global literary traditions and a
new perspective on pre-modern verse in terms of the delight and data it offers.
