Most head impacts in sports never make it into the data, and that could be distorting what we know about brain injury risk. Recognizing the limitations of incomplete datasets, researchers developed and applied novel imputation methods to estimate missing head acceleration event (HAE) data. Using sensor-equipped mouthguards and video footage from an entire season of collegiate men’s ice hockey, they applied two levels of imputation to reconstruct both sensor- and video-based exposure. Their analysis showed that missing data can significantly underestimate exposure metrics – up to 109% for key impact forces – highlighting the need for more accurate exposure estimates in brain trauma research. Improving data completeness could change how we understand, and ultimately prevent, sports-related brain injuries. Head impacts in youth sports often go unnoticed, but new research is helping to quantify their frequency and intensity in real time. In a study of high-school female wrestlers, researchers used instrumented mouthguards (iMGs) to capture over 1,300 true-positive head acceleration events (HAEs) during 248 matches. Video analysis revealed that most HAEs occurred during neutral play, especially hand fighting, with higher kinematics recorded in offensive and high-intensity moves like takedowns and ground maneuvers. Athletes reported generally positive experiences with the devices, suggesting they are a viable tool for monitoring head impacts. This kind of data brings us closer to protecting athletes before injuries occur, not just after.
