On Saturday, our Urban Journalism Workshop students visited the Washington Commanders’ headquarters in Ashburn to learn more about sports journalism and media.
They learned about what it takes from team video producer Kayla Key and sports journalist Kelsey Nicole Nelson, both members of WABJ. They were then tasked with crafting a lede for a story about the Commanders.
For week 5 of the Urban Journalism Workshop… We brought in a few pros in the digital space to discuss strategies for building a digital platform. @HolderSports moderated this informative conversation.
Students stepped inside the world of TV news. They got a behind the scenes look at @wusa9 of what it’s like from a reporter, producer, assignment editor & news director’s perspective. Thanks to Cary Hernandez and her team for sharing their experience with our students! #WABJ
Week two of UJW focused on print journalism. Students had an opportunity to practicing pitching a story with Washington Post Reporter @jas__golden. They did a great job.
They also learned about news judgment, managing a beat (William Ford, Sam Collins, Tia Mitchell) and fact checking (Michael Green). And they are already getting ready for the final projects by brainstorming with their mentors on story ideas. #UJW2026#WABJ#YoungJournalists
