I am profoundly honored to begin work under President @realdonaldtrump & @secdef as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. I am also very grateful to @VP, including for swearing me in last week. đ§”1/
The United Kingdom has an extraordinarily proud military history. It commands our respect. There is again a great need for more British military strength in this critical time. We urge the UK to meet that need with urgency, scale, and determination. 1/
âat the Somme, Passchendaele, and Ypres in the Great War, and at Dieppe, El Alamein, and in the North Atlantic in the Second. Allow me, on behalf of my country, to pay special homage to them.â 3/
âOur purpose now must be to take our resolve from the legacy of Normandy â to look at our challenges realistically and seriously, to build our military strength individually and together, and to restore our home fronts that can, once again, supply overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions.â 4/4
As part of commemorating the legacy of World War II, while in Norway I visited the site where the Norwegian Operations Group based out of in the spring of 1945. NORSO was the only American combat operation in Norway during World War II, and helped hinder the return of German troops to aid in the defense of the Third Reich. 1/
We also visited the memorial to the team members who died when their B-24 Liberator crashed, seeking to join those who were able to parachute in. This was especially moving because one of the members of my team, Colonel Daniel Magruder, a special operations officer himself, found an unexpected tie to this mission â his relative paid the ultimate price as part of that crew It was a vivid reminder of the dedication of those men and the cost of war. 3/
This visit was especially meaningful for me, as my grandfather served in the NORSO mission. I take from it an inspiration and a model for the kind of partnership we and our allies are seeking to recreate in a world that once more demands our collective clarity, purpose, and dedication. 4/4
It was an honor to attend a third roundtable with our partners from the GCC and Jordan today, graciously hosted by Bahrainâs Ambassador, Sheikh Abdullah Al Khalifa. DoW values the relationship with these critical partners, who have stepped up over the past few months to lead in their own defense. We had a productive discussion about a range of topics, including the situation in the Middle East and how our partners can further underwrite regional security by increasing investment in their national defense capabilities.
It was great to have a very productive discussion with @rufoalice during my visit to France. Like her, I greatly value our candid, strategic, and respectful dialogue. France has long encouraged Europe to do more for its defense, and we are now working in that direction within the context of NATO 3.0. 1/
I would also like to express our gratitude for the gracious hospitality of the French government and people during our visit to Normandy to commemorate D-Day and all the sacrifices our forebears made for our security and freedom. Our precious historical sitesâand most of all our honored deadâare honored and well-kept by our French allies. 2/2
.@SECWAR âWE ARE DEFENDING THE HOMELAND AND WE ARE TAKING BACK OUR HEMISPHEREâŠ
This president came in and said NOT ONLY is the Monroe Doctrine aliveânot only does the Roosevelt Corollary liveâBUT NOW WE HAVE THE DONROE DOCTRINE.â
I had the great honor on Saturday to serve as the senior civilian American representative at the International Ceremony commemorating the 82nd D-Day anniversary. It was a particular privilege, as the U.S. representative, to honor all of our brave allies that day, but especially our British and Canadian allies, who played the leading role at the nearby Juno and Sword Beaches. 1/
I concluded my remarks with a call to look forward: âOur purpose now must be to take our resolve from the legacy of Normandy â to look at our challenges realistically and seriously, to build our military strength individually and together, and to restore our home fronts so that they can, once again, supply overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions.â 5/
âIf we all do our part in this, then we can hope with confidence that we will achieve the noble purpose Eisenhower set for his forces that grave day: âSecurity for ourselves in a free world.ââ 6/6
