Thomas Paine’s 1776 pamphlet Common Sense helped spark support for American independence by turning revolutionary ideas into clear, persuasive prose. Nearly one in twelve colonists owned a copy of the pamphlet and were likely influenced by its patriotic ideas.
While Paine is often associated with Philadelphia’s revolutionary culture, he also had strong ties to New York, being gifted land by the state government, building a home, and eventually passing away there. Paine loved America and had a special fondness for New York.
Today, Paine’s New York cottage is open to the public as an historic house operated by the Huguenot and New Rochelle Historical Association.
