One of America’s oldest mysteries began in North Carolina. 🏝️ English settlers arrived on Roanoke Island in 1585, but the colony later vanished. It is remembered as the legendary “Lost Colony.” #IMLS250

Protecting priceless artifacts takes the right environment. In New York, @SewardHouse is installing a modern climate control system to safeguard the historic home and collections of statesman William Henry Seward. This project is an excellent example of how an #IMLSgrant can help American history endure for generations. #IMLS250

Thomas Paine’s 1776 pamphlet Common Sense helped spark support for American independence by turning revolutionary ideas into clear, persuasive prose. Nearly one in twelve colonists owned a copy of the pamphlet and were likely influenced by its patriotic ideas. While Paine is often associated with Philadelphia’s revolutionary culture, he also had strong ties to New York, being gifted land by the state government, building a home, and eventually passing away there. Paine loved America and had a special fondness for New York. Today, Paine’s New York cottage is open to the public as an historic house operated by the Huguenot and New Rochelle Historical Association. #IMLS250
