What an amazing semester we had at the Schusterman Center! We’ve hosted book talks and brown bags on so many topics. And Dr Sarah Abrevaya Stein gave the amazing, joy-filled Fall Gale Lecture. We’re grateful to all who were part of it. Happy holidays! We‘ll see you next semester!

Tehila Hakimi presenting her newest book, Hunting in America, part of the Tarbut Hebrew Arts and Culture Lecture Series. Hakimi discussed her inspiration, focusing on work and violence in literature. She took questions on the translation process, her audience, and culture shock.

Thanks to a Rapoport Summer Fellowship, Shehan McFadden (Anthropology) spent 2 months this summer in Spain & Morocco, performing fieldwork for her research. As part of her research, she visited significant sites to Jewish history, including the Tetouan and Tangier cemeteries.

On September 10, Dr. Jacob Daniels (Assistant Director of the Schusterman Center) presented his recent book, The Jews of Edirne. The talk covered the experience of Edirne Jews from the turn of the century to the nascent Turkish nation. What a great way to start the year!

With Rapoport grant funding, Dr. Daniels went to Bulgaria and Greece this summer to learn about local Jewish life in the late 19th-early 20th centuries. In search of primary sources written in Ladino, he visited libraries and archives in Plovdiv, Sofia, Athens, and Thessaloniki.
