Don't get me wrong i LOVED the CTB era ... not sure we can ever touch '14-'19, or need to -- but it was hard work & a model the game has moved on from.
So.. i can be glad for how this is shaping up NOW, while still holding Tony Bennett up as my all time biggest sports idol.

The NBA just did something leagues almost never do: side against one of its own owners, in his own market, during the Finals.
Live broadcast rights are the most protected asset in sports. Disney and friends paid $76B in the latest media deal partly for moments exactly like this. Bars need licenses just to show games. Yet within hours of James Dolan pulling the plug on the watch party outside his own arena, the league cleared New York City to stream Game 4 free on public street furniture.
Dolan's stated reason for canceling: a 999-person cap was an insult when "we're about millions of people."
So the city took him literally. LinkNYC runs roughly 2,000 kiosks across the five boroughs, built on the corpse of the old payphone franchise. Dolan controls the Garden. The city controls every sidewalk around it.
One detail makes the whole thing sting. MSG requested the 999-person permit itself, then canceled when it was approved.
Owners win these standoffs when they own the only screen in town. Dolan just found out the city has two thousand of them.

This below doesn't come close to quantifying what a big deal these NBA finals have been, and what an impact the Knicks' run has had across digital, social as well as broadcast media.
It's swallowed up mass culture, for a brief period, and it's kind of astonishing.

During the 1970 Knicks-Lakers NBA Finals, 4 student protestors were shot and killed at Kent State University by the National Guard
4 days later in downtown Manhattan, 1,200 workers attacked 1,000 student protesters in what became known as the Hard Hat Riot
Later that night in Madison Square Garden, a hobbled Willis Reed limped out of the tunnel for Game 7, made 2 shots and propelled the Knicks to their first NBA championship
Immediately after the game, ABC cut away to an unusually late 10pm White House press conference
President Nixon addressed the student protests which had intensified after he escalated the war in Vietnam to include Cambodia.
One of the questions he was asked: โMr. President, some Americans believe this country is heading for revolution, and others believe that crime and dissent and violent demonstrations are leading us to an era of repression. I wonder if you would give us your view of the state of American society and where it is heading.โ
Six hours later at 4 AM Nixon woke up and abruptly decided to visit the Lincoln Memorial to engage student protesters there. After talking to a small group of students for an hour around Lincolnโs statue, he went to the Capitol, sat in the empty chamber and made his valet give a speech to the cleaning staff.
Back in New York, after one of the most politically and socially volatile weeks in modern American history, there would be no ticker-tape parade for the Knicks

It's the 1993-94 season and Wake Forest has a promising young freshman named Tim Duncan. Also on that team is a back-up sophomore guard named Stacey Castle. Tim Duncan would go on to college and NBA greatness. While the NBA wasn't in Stacey Castle's future, fatherhood was.
