Cornerstone mourns the passing today of the inspirational Michael Yakubovich. Michael was a principled and righteous leader who, if not for the evil of cancer, would be serving in the New Hampshire Senate today.
Michael was as compassionate and kind as he was forceful in fighting against injustice. The Granite State is a darker place today without the light of his example.
Michael had the strength of a warrior in his fight against cancer. He pursued emerging treatments energetically while remaining physically active, playing music, and staying politically engaged.
Last summer, Michael had regained enough energy to step forward as a leader of New Hampshire's Right to Try movement.
HB 701, a Right to Try bill signed by Governor Ayotte in August, was named in Michael's honor. In the fall, legislators introduced two more Right to Try bills—one of which was again named for Michael with his blessing.
The House resoundingly endorsed both bills two weeks ago, and Governor Ayotte asked the legislature to pass them.
Then, as now, Right to Try faced relentless opposition. But Michael, driven by empathy for sick and suffering patients, never backed down. One year ago, Michael wrote of opponents of Right to Try: "I have no nice words for them, considering they are fighting the most fragile & damaged people on the planet."
Michael rejected the idea that pro-innovation reforms should involve years of protracted deliberation. He explained his position in an op-ed he wrote last May.
"When you or someone you love hears the words 'you have cancer,' your world stops," he wrote. "The flood of emotions is overwhelming."
"But what comes next is just as hard. You begin a fight for your life. And in that fight, time is everything. You don't have the luxury of waiting for years of bureaucratic reviews and regulatory approvals. You need options. Now."
This morning, around the time Michael passed away, state legislators were discussing Right to Try in a committee of conference. As we pray for peace for Michael's family and loved ones, we also pray that legislators will do the right thing, move Right to Try forward, and continue to honor Michael's legacy and example.

Big Pharma Rochefort @roche4nh is a thief, violating senate ethics by voting for bills that benefit his bottom line.
He attached language to a homeschool bill that ensured that pharmacies would make more money off of you. Pharmacies like the ones he sold and has equity in.

My brother just died waiting for experimental drugs for his cancer because it was tied up in red tape. If you live in the North Country, your senator is Senator Rochefort @roche4nh . He recently killed a bill that would allow people like my brother to at least try experimental drugs instead of just accepting death.
Please join me in asking him to reverse his stance and allow "Right to Try Drugs". It is not to late for him to change his mind. He used to be a pretty good senator, and I hope he will change his mind and be good again.

Big Pharma Rochefort @roche4nh is responsible for killing off life-saving experimental new medicine. The only experimental medicine he supports is teenagers getting their breasts cut off without notifying parents (SB 520, which he approved as committee chair of Senate HHS).
Why? Because all of his donors are big pharma, who make money off of child sex changes but would lose money from biotech startups doing well.
Let Roachfort know you think his support of child sex change is disgusting, and primary him.
The NH Senate has again rejected Right to Try, shutting the door on patients seeking experimental treatments. A few state senators have decided that New Hampshire is closed for business to biotech firms offering frontier therapies.
Here's what happened and our next steps.
This term, a bipartisan majority of the state House passed HB 1734 and HB 1735: two bills to make New Hampshire the best state in America for experimental therapies. The bills were based largely on existing laws in Montana and Florida.
Granite Bio Innovation—and the businesses and patients we support—helped build a coalition across every branch of elected state government to support these bills. We also worked for several months to build consensus in the Senate. Senators received calls from patients, businesses, investors, scientists, and healthcare providers supporting the bills.
After Senator David Rochefort requested a long list of changes to HB 1734, the biotech firms involved agreed to every change. But these negotiations were not in good faith. Senator Rochefort abruptly decided he would not accept any version of the bills, and the Senate rejected both.
The New Hampshire House then attached both bills to Senate Bill 504—this time with an even broader bipartisan vote of 197 to 145. Rather than negotiate a compromise, the Senate decided to fight this bill at any cost.
Sadly, there is no pathway for making New Hampshire a commercial-scale hub for experimental therapies until the composition of the NH Senate changes.
Until then, Granite Bio Innovation will continue to support New Hampshire's patients and innovators in the following ways:
• Shaping other areas of state legislation in a way that facilitates frontier biotechnology in New Hampshire.
• Advocating for state and federal regulatory policy that allows New Hampshire's biotech ecosystem to flourish.
• Serving as a nexus for innovators and pro-biotech policymakers, including through an annual conference in August and by providing resources to healthcare providers.

We moved the conversation forward after a year of work in the House to advance these bills for patients suffering from rare diseases and to push forward the future of medical innovation.
The Senate made the wrong decision today, choosing not to stand with patients and not to support the kind of breakthrough treatments that can save lives.
As a campaign promise in my run for Congress, I will always fight for patients’ ability to live and for families to have real hope through access to breakthrough treatments, experimental options, and medical innovation that can change lives. The craziest thing about New Hampshire is that we cannot build New Hampshire today in most of New Hampshire.
The villages we love, the downtowns we celebrate, and the mill towns, farm towns, and seacoast towns that shaped this state - almost none of them could be built today under our current zoning, permitting, and regulatory codes. Too dense. Too mixed-use. Too close to wetlands. Too close to the road. Not enough parking. Wrong setbacks. Wrong lot sizes. Wrong everything.
We turned the state we love into something illegal to replicate. Now we wonder why young families cannot afford to live here.
