BC's $500 million Rental Protection Fund is now the biggest buyer of apartments in BC. It helps non-profits purchase and maintain older housing stock to protect renters from skyrocketing rents and displacement.
Ontario does not have a similar program.

.@WorkerCoop runs an important program that allows co-op & non-profit investments to be held in self-directed RRSPs & TFSAs. Canadians have invested $70M through this program in projects that improve their community!
The federal government asked for feedback on RRSP/TFSA rules.
Union Co-operative is happy to have contributed to CWCF's submission that includes recommendations to make it easier for co-operatives to raise community capital.

For example, currently 90% of shares in a co-operative must be owned by members. This makes it hard to raise funds from charitable foundations, specialty funds, or non-members who want to support the mission of a co-operative.

A housing project called Build Now is aiming to construct 10,000 homes in Waterloo Region by 2030. The residential units will be for families in need and they are to be placed on the market for approximately half the price of current new homes.
