📢Press Release: Nonprofit Legal Workers Say:
@MFJLegal is Trying to Bust Union by Hiring Strikebreakers!
Mobilization for Justice Management Escalates Union Busting Campaign to the Detriment of Clients as Strike Enters its Second Month.
ALT The unionized staff of Mobilization for Justice, Inc. (MFJ), a nonprofit legal services organization, are accusing MFJ Management of using union busting tactics as the legal workers enter their fifth week on strike. On March 25, MFJ Union members confirmed that Management has hired strikebreakers to replace some of the 109 unionized employees who have been out on strike since February 23.
"MFJ cannot run a legal services nonprofit on scab labor," said Ella Abeo, a Union Bargaining Team Member and Paralegal in MFJ's Housing Project. "By hiring untrained strikebreakers, Management is conceding that it cannot sustain the volume of cases without proper staffing. MFJ needs to meet the Union's demands so that we can get back to work helping
ALT Management's delay to return to negotiations and failure to make a fair contract offer to settle the strike is harming MFJ clients and vulnerable New Yorkers. During the strike, MFJ is still responsible for client's cases and providing competent legal assistance because clients have signed a retainer with the organization. But clients have reported to MFJ Union members, who were their case handlers before the strike, that MFJ is not providing the same level of services, they are falling through the cracks, and they are suffering from the consequences.
March 12 is #EqualPayDay, symbolizing how far into this year women have had to work to earn the same amount men earned last year. Women earn just 78 cents for every dollar earned by men.
We can and must close the gender wage gap and ensure equal pay for equal work.
Today we reflect on the life and lasting legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. King actively worked to bridge the modern civil rights and labor movements which shared, he said, "a unity of purpose." #MLK2024

OPEIU stands in solidarity with @UAW in their fight for a fair contract. 🪧✊

Why are we rallying tomorrow? For dignity. Council staff can be fired on the spot, for no cause. We desperately need a comprehensive, clear policy for disciplinary & other workplace issues -- similar to what other City employees have. #dignityonthejob
