Great volunteer opportunity for #Emeryville and neighboring #Oakland residents tomorrow (Saturday) from 9am-12 pm. If you’re unfamiliar with The @UrbanCompProj, they are a volunteer led organization who facilitate cleanups of illegal dumping sites throughout the East Bay.

42 Urban Compassion Project volunteers cleared the most disgusting foul-smelling block in the Bay Area. 10 tons in 2 hours. We’ve cleared 2,300 tons of illegal dumping since 2021. Since 2021, the Urban Compassion Project has cleared over 2,300 tons of illegal dumping in Oakland. 3,000 volunteers have joined these efforts since. We fund all the cleanups via grassroots support. This year, we’ve paid over $60,000 for cleanups. We receive no support from the city. Illegal dumping is a huge issue in the Bay Area, especially Oakland, given the high costs of dumping, governmental inefficiencies, and lack of enforcement and accountability. But we’ve found a few solutions to clear areas and maintain the cleanliness. We are negotiating contracts with Waste Management to lower dump fees and receive a 20% reduction in dump costs. We’d like to expand this program to broader Oakland. We’re trying our best to get the city to collaborate with us. Councilpeople have helped us already and have committed to keep doing so, even just giving us dumpsters from time to time. This is a step in the right direction. Our Homeless Ambassador Program has been very successful. After each cleanup, we assign several trusted homeless neighbors to help main the cleanliness of the areas and report illegal dumping. This also gives the homeless a sense of purpose. We’re working with small businesses to implement surveillance measures to hold dumpers accountable. But we’re ultimately going to need the city to enforce fines and penalties to disincentivize them. Not a photo-op instagram.com/p/DMLwkI7hYyL/ Mayor Lee let’s not just talk about it—be about it. I’ve been genuinely impressed by the tireless work this volunteer-led organization Urban Compassion Project (UCP) has done for years—cleaning up our neighborhoods using donations to pay for dumpsters, trash bags, and other essential supplies. Their commitment to Oakland is unwavering. And yet, here’s the contradiction: every year, the Mayor and each City Council office receives an allocation of 12 free dumpsters—ranging from 6 to 30 cubic yards—courtesy of Waste Management. But these dumpsters have not been made available to support UCP community almost weekly or more clean-up efforts. Recently, Mayor Barbara Lee publicly declared her desire for Oakland to be ā€œthe cleanest, safest, and greenest city.ā€ If that’s truly the goal, then let’s start by matching words with action. We urge the Mayor and Councilmembers to commit these free dumpsters to support the community members and organizations such as UCP that’s already doing the work—and to show real appreciation for the volunteers who are making Oakland cleaner every week, without fanfare or city funding. @Oakland @BarbaraLee_CA

First post! UCP is the biggest grassroots movement the Bay has seen in decades. šŸ’ŖšŸ½ Over 800 volunteers this year alone, from every walk of life. Over 260 tons of illegal dumping cleared in 2025 (over 2,400 tons since 2021). 12 homeless ambassadors keeping the areas clean.
