If heading out to recreate this Memorial Day weekend, watch out for abandoned mines. Old mines can be covered by sagebrush, old boards, etc and difficult to see. Mines can be intriguing but can contain dangerous gases, unstable structures, and explosives. #stayoutstayalive

Today we hosted the board of @UtahOGM for a site tour. We visited @Ovintiv’s drill rig about to reach terminal depth and XCL‘s new E Frack multi well pad. Many thanks to Ovintiv and XCL and to the division and board for making this possible.

Deputy Director Dana Dean was awarded the John E. Willson Distinguished Alumni Award from the U of U’s Mining Engineering Program. She is the first female awardee since its creation in 2000. She won in 2021 but due to Covid, didn’t receive the award in person until now.

Two new Utah Board of Oil, Gas and Mining members were sworn in today. Selma Sierra will represent environmental and ecological matters and Alan Walker will represent oil and gas. Board members Gordon Moon and Rich Borden were sworn in for their second four year terms.

July 2021 AMRP staff were notified of a coal seam fire burning close to the old Peerless Mine near Helper. AMRP worked with @UtahFFSL to locate the site and identified a second fire in a nearby coal refuse pile. Both fires were likely ignited by the recent Bear wildfire.

AMRP worked with @OSMRE to obtain emergency approval of grant fund expenditures. An contractor with experience on several previous reclamation projects was hired.

Coal seam was excavated and quenched with water and fire suppressant foam and mixed with soil from the site. Refuse pile was also quenched. After 24 hours of monitoring, no hot spots were identified, and the area backfilled. Thanks also to @BLMUtah.
