Utah's Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission (JPEC) plays a vital role in strengthening public trust in the courts through rigorous, nonpartisan judicial evaluations. By providing voters with meaningful information about judges' performance, JPEC promotes transparency, accountability, and informed decision-making while preserving the independence that is essential to a fair judiciary. Utah's approach has earned national recognition. The Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System (IAALS), working alongside retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, recognized Utah's judicial performance evaluation process as a "national model of excellence" for balancing judicial independence with public accountability. A strong judiciary depends on an informed public—and Utah continues to lead the way. Did you know Utah has a Client Protection Fund to help protect the public from dishonest conduct by legal practitioners? Established by the Utah Supreme Court in 1977, the Fund for Client Protection provides reimbursement in the rare instances when a lawyer or Licensed Paralegal Practitioner (LPP) mishandles client funds or engages in dishonest conduct. The Fund helps: ✔️ Compensate clients for losses caused by dishonest actions ✔️ Preserve public trust in the legal profession ✔️ Support individuals already facing challenges during legal matters This program reflects the Utah State Bar’s commitment to protecting the public—not only through regulation and oversight, but also by promoting civic knowledge and helping Utahns navigate the legal system with confidence.
