On June 10, his lawyer was denied access to him, dragged along a corridor by Elmatov Nodir, head of the detention center, and his phone confiscated. Good news! This farmer just won his appeal to win back his land 👏🏼 Let's hope this encourages others to fight for their rights and speak out against injustice.
🇺🇿This case exposes the government's deeply coercive use of the system of crop placement which requires #cotton and wheat farmers to grow a specific amount of crops. It has effectively replaced the state-imposed quota which was identified as a key driver of #ForcedLabor.
Despite promises of reforms in the agriculture sector, @GOVuz still controls every aspect of farming.

A presidential decree adopted in May 2026 restricts foreign investors’ access to agricultural land & limits it to unused, non-irrigated, & pasture land. Under the decree, foreign investors may obtain land provided they invest in projects worth at least US $10 million:

5/ These harms could possibly have been avoided if development banks had taken effective measures to address the long list of violations and retaliations that Uzbek Forum reported over a period of 4 years or more. Now that Indorama has prepaid its loans, banks now claim they have no leverage to enforce compliance.
