On this day in 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution declaring the creation and design of the U.S. flag. It proclaimed “that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation." May the flag forever wave over our nation, proudly protected by Veterans who have bravely fought for our freedom.

A volunteer for 13 years, Vietnam Veteran Gerald Patrick Semien is a familiar face at Houston VA. Twice a week, he spends time with Veterans in the hospice unit, especially with those who don't have visitors. “A lot of them don’t have families here, so I love talking with them and making their life more comfortable while they’re here.” va.gov/.../stories/a-friend-… #HoustonVA #MichaelEDeBakeyVA #NoVeteranDiesAlone

For several years, Army Veteran Robert Lindemann suffered from uncontrolled focal epilepsy with seizures originating deep in his right temporal lobe. In the past, surgeons would treat focal epilepsy by performing a craniotomy and remove a large amount of the temporal lobe. But thanks to new Visualase V2 technology, brain surgery is now less invasive and involves a hole smaller than a pencil eraser. Mr. Lindeman was the first Veteran in the VA health care system to receive the surgery which was performed by Houston VA surgeons. va.gov/houston-health-care/s…

Robert Lindemann served for 33 years. When he started "losing chunks of time," he knew something was wrong. He became the first patient in the VA system to undergo a new procedure to treat his epilepsy. He was discharged two days later. “At the Houston VA, I got first-rate care by first-rate doctors with the latest and greatest technology. You can’t beat that.” news.va.gov/147103/first-rec…

Today we honor the nearly 160,000 Allied troops stormed the shores of Normandy. Thousands of brave Americans faced heavy fire, cleared mined beaches, and scaled staggering cliffs in the largest seaborne invasion in history. You helped free a continent, protect our nation, and preserve liberty. To those who did not come home: your sacrifice will be remembered. Always.
