For the graduating seniors: goodbyes are never easy—especially when you’re leaving something that has nurtured you for years. When you look at the academic years that have passed, the mundane and ordinary scenes can be overlooked. Yet, it’s in these small pockets of time, with all of the positive and negative emotions surrounding it, that define one’s university experience. What better way to reminisce on these memories than with a soundtrack? By Elisha Cayanga, Claire Mayol, and Percy Roy Photos by Via Panopio Graphics by Arian Patrocino

For the times when you needed solitude to collect yourself and appreciate how far you had come. You’re a little older and a little wiser, yet you still carry the same gratitude knowing that no matter what, you’ll always have people you can return to.

When we find ourselves at a crossroad between who we are and who we could be, we often forget where we began. In looking back, we realize how people who raised us are our cornerstones, standing strong through time’s changes. The connection between mothers and children is one of these enduring links, reminding us that we would not be the people we are today without our mothers’ guiding hands. šŸ©·šŸ’ This Mother’s Day, Vantage Magazine spotlights the individual and intertwined growth between mothers and their children within the Ateneo space. Through their accounts, we captured how motherhood and womanhood are shaped, sustained, and reimagined across generations through shared and differing experiences. While one works in the Ateneo Grade School (AGS) and the other is a University student, Woman National Master Joann Datu and Princess Jhode Datu (2 BS LM) share a drive fueled by purpose, passion, and discipline. They serve as each other’s inspiration and reminder to do everything with and from the heart, whether that be guiding young chess players or pursuing dreams of becoming a lawyer. As AGS Chess Midgets Team coach, Joann likens the act of training students to raising her daughter. In her 16 years of teaching, she accentuates how chess and motherhood converge when love does not assume responsibility. Instead, one should be driven by a desire to put the youth above themselves—threading the lines of teaching and parenting together, instead of pulling them apart at the seams. Weaving from her exposure to the Ateneo community since early childhood, Princess equates her lawyer dream with always wanting to put her best foot forward. She underscores that the difference between complacency and patience is realized through demonstrating passion with action. Although not constrained in one career path, Coach Joann and Princess’ deep admiration and steadfast faith in each other’s success sustain their connection amid individual pursuits. Alone and together, they prove that there is no sweeter success than one that the two of them can share.

Assistant Vice President for Ignatian Leadership Formation Marie Joy Salita, PhD and Millie Salita (2 BS LEARN) share the same Ateneo space, but they move through it in different ways. Ma’am Joy has spent years in service work and behind-the-scenes roles, where decisions often meant careful discernment shaped by experience. Led by the same calling to serve, Millie puts service into practice as a member of the Sanggunian’s Department of Student Welfare and Services and other organizations. For Ma’am Joy, her work was never something kept separate from home. Her daughter grew up seeing how she made choices and how she carried both the mistakes and lessons that came with them. She shared how Millie was exposed to this way of working and how it shaped the way she now understands the world and herself in it. Over time, Ma’am Joy sees how this exposure formed the way her daughter understands both the world and herself within it. As a student-leader, Millie attunes her love for service through student organizations. Her journey in serving the Ateneo community begins by listening to students and extends to representing their needs. She emphasizes the perspective that one’s youth should not limit one from dedicating oneself to any cause. Instead, it is up to people to admit and know when they have little experience, yet still choose and commit to help others anyway. In the Ateneo, their paths do not run parallel so much as they complete different sides of the same work. Ma’am Joy holds the slower, structural weight of formation, while Millie meets its immediate expression in student life. Between the shaping of systems and the visible work of engagement, their connection shows how service can be carried across roles without losing its center.
