He was the guy who always said "I'm fine." Even when he was eating alone. Even when he cried in the car before walking into work. Even when his phone had notifications but no one was actually checking on him. He had people around him. But he was deeply, quietly lonely. One day his colleague asked, "You good?" The usual "I'm fine" came up his throat, But this time, something in him broke. "No. Honestly? I'm not." The colleague pulled up a chair. Didn't offer advice. Didn't check his watch. Just listened. That 10 minute conversation changed something in him. He went home, called his mother for the first time in months. Texted an old friend "I miss you." Slept without his chest feeling heavy. Nobody rescued him.๐Ÿค

I found my dad's old journal yesterday. Thirty years of entries, and on the last page he'd written my name over and over. I realized then that I'd spent so long waiting for him to say the words that I never noticed he'd been writing them all along. Sometimes love isn't loud. Sometimes it's in the margins of a life you almost missed.

I used to shrink myself in rooms where I didn't feel chosen. Not because I was insecure. But because somewhere along the way I learned that being too much made people uncomfortable. So I made myself smaller. Agreed when I disagreed. Laughed when I was hurting. Stayed when I should have left. All to keep people comfortable who never once asked if I was okay. The most painful betrayal I ever experienced wasn't from an enemy. It was from me. Every single time I chose their comfort over my own truth.

I used to rehearse phone calls before making them. Not important calls. All calls. "Hi, is this the right number forโ€ฆ" I'd practice that. Alone. In my room. Like the world was an exam I hadn't studied enough for. Nobody knew. Because on the outside I was the funny one. The confident one. The one who always had something to say. But inside? I was a child who had been made to feel that existing loudly was an inconvenience to everyone around him. So I shrunk. And then I performed confidence so well that even I forgot I was performing. You're allowed to put it down.

Nobody checked on me the year I was everyone's therapist. Not because they didn't care. But because somewhere in childhood, I learned that needing things made people leave. So I became everything for everyone. Smiled through funerals. Showed up when I was falling apart. Became the person others called at 2am. Nobody had my number. If this is you I need you to understand something: You didn't become strong. You became afraid to be human.

I have a relative that was hell bent on japa. He even said that if after he leaves, and he dies abroad, that no one should bring his dead body back to Nigeria. He's in his 50s now and still in Nigeria. ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ End

All men and women, especially Christians, are called to fix their gaze on those who suffer, on the pain of the lonely, and on those who are emarginated for various reasons, for without them we cannot build a just society. Only together can we build communities of solidarity capable of caring for everyone, in which wellbeing and peace can flourish for the benefit of all. Caring for the humanity of others helps us to live our own lives to the full.
