5 highlights: - A nation with AI vs one without could be like WWII Marines vs medieval swordsmen - AI should be regulated like the FAA regulates planes. Mandatory safety testing before release, government power to block models - AI might cause permanent job loss. He's pushing wage insurance, retention incentives, and possibly UBI funded by taxing AI companies - Democracies should form a coalition, share chips with each other, and deny them to adversaries - AI is the new nuclear weapons. It resets the entire geopolitical board
Today I'm publishing a new essay, Policy on the AI Exponential. AI is progressing extremely fast—much faster than the policy process was built to handle. The essay lays out where I think the technology is now, and the action needed to close the gap: darioamodei.com/post/policy-…

ICEYE just raised $1.16B at a $12B valuation, led by General Atlantic. Two students at Aalto University in Helsinki started it in 2014. Today their radar satellites watch Earth for 7 European governments and produce a new satellite roughly every week. They built Poland's national military satellite system in 12 months. Did a $1.9B JV with Rheinmetall for Germany. The next big European defense story isn't Helsing. It's a Finnish satellite company.

LucenRobotics at Founders Inc Canopy Demo Day is building robots that work the night shift restocking shelves so humans don't have to: "We're building this mainly for the night shift. It's really hard for people to do this type of job. Also, it's expensive. Think about you have to not sleep and work for the night." "My sister owned a 5 retail shop in the city. She told me daily it's really busy, it's fast moving. Even half the time the workers are spending time just for restocking. I was thinking, we can make a robot to help her with that." "With our robot doing the restocking, workers can help cashiering and take care of customers, and our robot can just run in there for restocking." - @Linyan_Fu host - @brycent

Jirobotics at @fdotinc Canopy Demo Day is building underwater robots because one founder's Navy comrades lost limbs constructing bridges underwater: "Wilson was part of the Singapore Navy, constructing bridges underwater. It was super dangerous because some of his comrades actually lost their limbs from doing so." "Out at sea, it's really scary. It's a super harsh environment. I think humans are meant to be on land." "We start with fish farms because they're maybe 20 meters deep. Your subsea cables, your underwater data centers, they are way deeper than that. The biggest challenge is vision. It's super dark and murky underwater. Communication gets really terrible because you're really deep. It's gonna take a lot of time for data to go all the way up." - @jerica_kuah @LerWilson host - @brycent

This company at @fdotinc Canopy Demo Day is building a 1-meter tall rocket that travels at Mach 1 to deliver emergency supplies: "It's our version of a smaller SpaceX. It's a 1 meter tall rocket that's supposed to deliver wherever you want." "In a village in Africa, if you need an anti-venom for someone who got bit by a snake, you cannot afford the time a normal drone takes. Something like this flies to that location in 5 minutes and can do that real fast." "This travels at 700 miles per hour, so like Mach 1. We're combining the drone into the rocket stage to get the best of both worlds. A drone has been a very proven technology over the past decade, and so has rockets at this scale." - Svanik & Topias host - @brycent

Neurex at @fdotinc Canopy Demo Day went from idea to prototype in 2 weeks. It tricks your brain into deeper sleep: "We went from idea to prototype in two weeks. So many people have tried our device and so many people want to try it. We don't have enough to give for everyone yet." "Deep sleep is very important. It's responsible for restoring your body, your energy, clearing out waste from your brain." "There's been so much research on acoustic stimulation, specifically pink noise. It boosts up those brain waves that you naturally have. It's like a trampoline, you know, when someone makes you jump higher." - @g0da_s @petravicaleksas host - @brycent

Enso Bioscience at @fdotinc Canopy Demo Day built an AI 2x more accurate than pathologists at estimating tumor parity: "Cancer is a very heterogeneous disease. The underlying biology of the tumor is unique to every person." "A patient may start a therapy that works on average, but then they develop resistance. That's why you have to pivot to another treatment if it exists." "We had to scrape a lot of datasets in the web, identify the correct architecture, find the right amount of compute. When we saw it worked two times better than pathologists, we were really amazed." - @LucaMMenga @mattia_faini host - @brycent

Space at @fdotinc Canopy Demo Day is giving your computer infinite storage that takes up zero space: "We've built a file system that allows terabytes of files to live on your computer, but none of the files take up any of your computer's storage space, and you don't need to wait for downloads to use them." "Every single week we basically fill up a terabyte of footage. Where do we offload this? Are we throwing this on Drive, on a hard drive? We're wasting time. We should be making content." "Behind the scenes, we're doing partial byte range reads and writes directly to cloud files. We're intercepting at the operating system layer. Read, write, rename, delete. Same way YouTube streams back a video. But we're streaming back any kind of binary file onto your file system." - @byjasonz @ItsMatthewAo @BapnaArihant host - @brycent

.@amano_labs at @fdotinc Canopy Demo Day is building hearing aids 250x cheaper than the $5,000 standard: "We aren't selling them like consistent enough with our manufacturing yet, so a big focus of ours has been designing for manufacture. Making sure every product we put out is consistent before we start releasing public test results and making any promises." "We're actually manufacturing the product ourselves with 3D printers, just to ensure it can be super customizable. Anyone with any kind of shape of ear, we can just take a photo and that goes straight into a 3D print." "Main thing we focus on is staying true to our ethos. We made it at that price point to make it as accessible as possible for all people around the world who can't afford these typical devices." - @arishs24 @aaronyu06 host - @brycent
