This is insane. The council could run an equivalent transport service for a fraction of this cost

So when it was reported 50% off private rents they actually meant up to 90% off.
The council house swapping Facebook groups and websites are very eye-opening. There are 6- and 7-bedroom properties on offer in Zone 2 at ~£750 a month. Private rents for similar properties would be £6,000 . Enormous subsidies are being distributed in the worst possible way.

just heard about an AI research lab that wanted funding for long-term research, so instead of raising money they apparently turned themselves into an HFT/quant shop and are trying to bankroll the research with trading profits and say they are already set for a few years

We just do not have many companies and certainly dont have a culture of using up loads of resources without a certain pay off. Paying people in their 20s $600k a yr is not the issue, people here would do this for $100k a yr, or even 0, but they dont have access to the resources.

it's not lack of compute that's the issze. it's that in Europe, it's unthinkable to pay a guy in his mid 20s $600k salary and give him resources and freedom to train models without having oversight by a committee of gerontocratic professorswho don't keep up with the research

britain needs its own competitive sovereign ai if access to frontier models can just be turned off like this.
starmer clearly isn’t in trump’s good books, so there will be no special exception for britain.
we need to take ai far more seriously and start building again in the country where it all began.
