Today is the anniversary of the death of Reg Baker in 1944. He was the Wing Commander for all four Typhoon squadrons based at Needs Oar Point airfield in the Forest on D-Day. Reg was an exceptional man and leader. He was shot down and killed over Normandy on June 16, 1944. 🧵

This is the original grave marker of a man named Dirk Jacobus Klink. He died in his Spitfire, on his birthday, 13 June 1942. He took off that day from RAF Ibsley on what should have been a routine training flight. For 2nd Lt Dirk Jacobus Klink, it was also his 30th birthday. 🧵

On this day in 1937, Reginald Joseph Mitchell, the designer of the Supermarine Spitfire, died in Southampton at the age of just 42. Mitchell never lived to see the impact the aircraft he helped to create would have. It became one of the defining symbols of WW2. 🧵

I have sections of runway from one of the New Forest D-Day airfields. It has been cut into manageable pieces which will fit in a car boot, and will be sold to raise money for East Boldre Village Hall at The Buckler's Hard Wartime Weekend (History & Heritage Event)... 🧵

On this day, 8 June 1944, the first Phoenix Caisson that formed part of the Mulberry Harbour plan, was sunk into position at Arromanches. Only a handful of the Mulberry Harbour elements were built in the New Forest, but the local contribution was still significant. 🧵

If you're in or near the New Forest in Hampshire next weekend, this is on. The Friends of the New Forest Airfields will be one of the exhibitors, and there's an exhibition too with various ww2 airfield artefacts on display.

I'm hoping you can help if you've an interest in airfield history, heritage please. I am a trustee of a WW1 airfield building in the New Forest which is used as a village hall - we're currently refurbishing it. Work is nearly complete but. rising costs have left us £35k short.

Never mind the Bayeux Tapestry or a 1st Edition Harry Potter... here's an original RAF Beaulieu site plan from the dark vaults of the Beaulieu Estate archives. It's HUGE. Unfortunately I didn't have a banana to hand.

Czechoslovak airmen and their Liberators at RAF Beaulieu, New Forest, during WW2. The 311 Squadron had the highest fatality rate of any Czechoslovak RAF squadron during the war. 32 of those deaths occurred whilst at Beaulieu.

WW2 RAF Trainer Dome at RAF Limavady Airfield, Limavady. The Dome trained gunners on aircraft by projecting enemy aircraft with 360 imagery. Left to the elements over decades since it closed, but thankfully now being restored as a community Heritage Facility with a £1M investment

Here’s how AI is rewriting history... I Googl'd Noor Inayat Khan. The left image is a genuine photo. The right AI-generated. The fake is pulled from a clickbait Facebook page. We're in an era where fictional can replace real history, and most casual observers won't even realise.

During WW2, USAAF airmen could recuperate at large English country houses which has been requisitioned by the American Red Cross. Today I visited one of the houses, now Walhampton School in the New Forest, to see what "then vs now" montage I could create. youtube.com/watch?v=l9NLqcPN…
