The photographs preserved in the Swiss National Library’s Archive Wehrli offer valuable insight into this history. They show women standing on glaciers, traveling through alpine landscapes, and participating in expeditions that demanded physical endurance and curiosity. Their presence complicates the traditional narrative of exploration as a purely masculine pursuit and invites a reassessment of how history has been framed and remembered. By looking more closely at these images, we begin to recognize the social and cultural dynamics that shaped who was documented and how their contributions were acknowledged. While written accounts often marginalized or omitted women’s experiences, photography captured moments that resist such erasure. These archival images do more than document the past; they expand our understanding of it.
