Why do I teach public school?
I am a person who reads the Bible and believes what I read. Here are two passages about God's heart for the poor:
Luke 4:16-21
And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read... "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He appointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are downtrodden, to proclaim the favorable year of the LORD... Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."
Psalm 72:12-14
For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
the afflicted who have no one to help.
He will take pity on the weak and the needy
and save the needy from death.
He will rescue them from oppression and violence,
for precious is their blood in his sight.
Here are three more about God telling us to help the poor:
Deut. 15:7 If there is a poor man among you, one of your brothers, in any of the towns of the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand to your poor brother; but you shall freely open your hand to him, and generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks.
Lev. 19:19 Now when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very corners of your field, neither shall you gather the gleanings, the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been commercially harvested, of your harvest. Nor shall you glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather the fallen fruit of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the needy and for the stranger. I am the LORD your God.
Psalm 82:3, 4 - Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
This is a big reason why I became a public school teacher. You have to go where the poor are. Last year, I had a student join my class midway through the school year. The vice principal came into my room and looked visibly shaken. She said, "Mike, I have never seen trauma like this child has been through." Vice principals see it all, so this surprised me. Two weeks later, I saw this kid smile. A few weeks later, I saw this kid making friends. This was a huge win. The kid struggled academically, but I didn't care because I gave this child a safe place at school.
I have seen kids with huge behavior problems settle down and actually be able to learn. I've seen others make gains academically. This is why I do what I do. Some days it is tiring work, but I remind myself why I am here.
It saddens me that politicians like Governor Abbott continue to make the job of teaching harder. Many of us are out here working with difficult populations, and Abbott is tying our hands behind our backs and blaming us while we are trying to teach in spite of him.
Maybe
@GovAbbottPress Governor Abbott and others need to be reminded of passages in the Bible that call us to serve the poor and not just the wealthy.
