Stepping in at short notice to give tomorrow's CSCA seminar. Please come/attend online if you're interested in: the legacy of Roman Britain, the history of building conservation, and the public shaming of people who demolish historical architecture for profit!
Schedule change! Please join us tomorrow 14 Feb with Dr Matthew Walker @WalkerArchHist speaking on STONEKILLER. Antiquarian Activism in Mid-Eighteenth Century Britain & Beyond. We are in the Howard Assembly Room at Downing at 12p.m. and online on Zoom: zoom.us/j/95748301627

I haven't seen a single person defend this policy. Because it's indefensible. Class war at the expense of children.
So Latin is cancelled for 5000 State school pupils These pupils will not even be able to complete their academic year studies as from Feb 2025, Latin is removed from State School curriculum altogether. No doubt many parents will comment “ it’s a dead language, what’s the point ? “ @holland_tom would really appreciate if you could pls share your thoughts on this policy announced by @educationgovuk , Do you think this will have detrimental affect on state school pupils ? @EducationNotTax Labour’s axing of Latin lessons is an act of cultural vandalism, link below 👇

It’s lucky we have a famously competent state, a well-funded health service, & courts with plenty of time on their hands, or I’d be worrying that this is a terrible decision

I'm sorry we lost. We will fight every remaining stage of the bill. I don't want to hear MPs a decade down the line saying they regret their votes. You knew.

I appreciate that I'm prolific today re assisted suicide. (By the weekend, I'll be asleep and / or watching Christmas movies. Or horror films...) But here's something I wrote for @guardian that might help some disabled people's fears for changing the law theguardian.com/commentisfre…

Many MPs are still undecided about tomorrow's vote. Here I will highlight some MPs who have voiced their opposition in the last 24 hours or so, with their reasons as to why:

Plymouth's wonderful 1950s stripped classicism has been given a much-needed clean!
Good news bulletin: Plymouth city centre's fabulous post-war civic architecture has been given a £2.1 million deep-clean, thanks to grant funding from @HistoricEngland and other match funders. Pictured is Pearl Assurance House (Alec French, 1952). What a difference a good scrub makes! 🧼

A dramatic pose, for a dramatic building. Hugely enjoyed showing the @CSCA_Cambridge summer school round Oxford today. Keble the highlight. Brilliant students, open to the gothic and, indeed, modernism, as well as the classical.

How do we rebuild after catastrophe? Whether earthquakes, urban fires, or the damage of war, architectural history has important lessons to teach us about how cities and settlements were rebuilt and reconstituted after their destruction.

On Oct 7, over 300 women in Israel were tragically killed and subjected to sexual abuse. Dozens of French mothers gathered in Paris to mark International Women's Day, stand in solidarity with Israeli women and demand the release of the 19 women still held hostage by Hamas 🇫🇷🇮🇱

A fabulous architect, and a wonderful person. Antoine was bemused by my lack of interest in the British motorcycle industry, but he was a key presence during my time in ABQ and it was a privilege to watch such a prestigious architect talk to and encourage students on equal terms
Antoine Predock died this past weekend in New Mexico. The architect and professor is remembered for the buildings he designed across the state, including at the University of New Mexico where he was a faculty member. ow.ly/Zo4o50QL3eC
