Sharing slice of the diss project, John Burnett @UCRiverside, traces the historical origins of how indigenous identities tangled w/ Chicano identity.
From 16th, 17th century politics to contemporary US Census counts that undercount, complicate official recognition of 1st nations
John Burnett teaches us on, "Indigenous Identity: Theory & Measurement":
Lessons:
-Public policy nudges Native Ams from identifying w/ their nation
-Allure among non-natives to attach to first nation identities
-Inadequacies of data collection when not "for us by us"

Next at #UCRPRIEC, Angelica Garcia-Mecas of @UCIrvine, shares “Interrogating `Viva La Raza’ and its centering of the ideal race and gendering for liberation.”
Here, Angelica pauses to consider racializing & gendering forces in forming mestizaje and "La Raza"
So, what do we learn from interrogating "Viva La Raza"?
Angelica Garcia-Mecas (@UCIrvine) teaches us that "La Raza" contains exclusionary elements like Machismo and Marianismo that link to Vendida (sell out) and Loyalist complex in mestizaje.

Diving right in to the #UCRPRIEC program, Samantha Canty and Michael Tesler of @UCIrvine ask, why do we see slack in Black approval of Af. Am. elected officials, namely Pres. Obama vs Vice Pres. Harris.
They reason its not just about in-group attitudes alone as you might guess.
Did you feel a wave of awesomeness wash over you just a minute ago?
Of course you did.
That's #UCRPRIEC organized and hosted by @dadakim & @MerollaJenn & Shaun Bowler about to kick off with a hybrid program featuring a stellar lineup!
