In 1990, disability rights activists crawled up 83 steps to the Capitol to demand equal access. Their protest helped pass the Americans with Disabilities Act. And yet, more than 30 years later, structural barriers still prevent many people with disabilities from fully participating in our democracy. Every eligible voter deserves access to the ballot. Democracy only works when everyone can participate. Read why an accessible democracy strengthens us all. As we near the end of Black History Month, we want to take a moment to honor the leaders who shaped American democracy. Throughout history, Black Americans have served as senators, congressmembers, judges, secretaries of state, and presidents, breaking barriers at every level of government. Their contributions to civic life have made American democracy stronger, more representative, and more just. One such example is Shirley Chisholm, who in 1968 became the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first Black candidate to seek a major party's presidential nomination. She ran on a simple truth: "Unbought and Unbossed." Her courage reminds us that democracy is strongest when everyone has a seat at the table. 🗳️ wevote.us | #BlackHistoryMonth #ShirleyChisholm #CivicEngagement #WeVote
