The first incursion of monsoon moisture is upon us, arriving in the form of increased cloudiness today. Along with the moisture increase, a stray shower or thunderstorm will be possible across northern AZ. Deeper moisture and much better chances arrive over the weekend. #azwx

The monsoon high will start building over northern Mexico this weekend, bringing rain across the Sierra Made Occidental. This is a classic early season signal. We'll be watching for that to move north into the Southwest. Monsoon season officially begins June 15. #NMwx #AZwx

While we see a Super El Nino event later this year? Not guaranteed but maybe the closest we will come since the last record setting one back in 1877! During its peak time frame of influence, this would be the usual weather pattern that should be expected.

Looks like the monsoon is about to start right on schedule. Which officially begins June 15th so stay turned because this one could be on steroids thanks to developing El Nino and very warm water's of eastern tropical pacific.

The new NMME highlights two areas of rather stormy conditions in the U.S. next winter, including the East and West Coasts. Due to El Niño, a strong subtropical jet stream will probably transport tropical moisture and mild air into the country, with fewer cold spells possible.

Windy conditions today and Tuesday will result in elevated fire weather conditions. Otherwise, look for warming through the week, ending with the hottest temperatures so far this year, as high pressure becomes established over the southwest United States. #azwx

Conditions remain dry and windy for the first half of this week. A Red Flag Warning is in effect today for most of Northern Arizona. A Fire Weather Watch continues to be in effect for Monday and Tuesday across most of Northern Arizona. Follow all fire restrictions in your area.

No surprises in the latest NMME climate model output. Niño intensity has ticked up in a few of the models (the CanESM5 was one of the last moderate Niño holdouts last month but it's all in on a near-record event now). I think the NCAR CESM1 broke or something this month. The response looks extremely classic too. Wet anomalies across the tropical Pacific, with the NE and Central Pacific also active thanks to the PMM. The Atlantic will be dry and hostile for basically the whole season, with drought possible in the Caribbean. The Gulf Coast will likely have a wet and stormy winter as the subtropical jet gets cranking.

Warm to hot temperatures with light winds continue today. A cooldown begins this weekend with southwesterly winds increasing to 15-25 mph, with 30-40 mph gusts possible. This combined with a dry air mass will lead to increased fire danger. #azwx
