#OnThisDay 1982: Argentina surrenders @RoyalMarines and @BritishArmy, supported by gunfire from @RoyalNavy, make the final assault on Port Stanley. The Royal Navy mobilised 112 ships (RN, RMAS, RFA, STUFT). 907 died (649 Argentine, 255 British and 3 locals).

Special Maritime Operations = UK Commando Force This morning, Commandos from 42 conducted a maritime interdiction operation on the vessel CMR Smyrtos, sailing under a false Cameroonian flag. Just another night's work for the UKCF's Special Maritime Operations specialist unit.

Friends to the end... On D-Day, 19-year old British paratrooper Private Emile Servais Corteil landed in the country of his father's ancestors with his German Shepherd Glen. Emile was the dog handler for his company of the 9th (Essex) Parachute Battalion and Glen's role was to provide guard duties and sniff out enemy troops on patrols. The Battalion was tasked with attacking the Merville battery on the east bank of the Dives river, but the drop was chaotic and scattered. The 3rd Parachute Brigade CO was also dropped far from where he should have been and he grouped together a small force of 40 men - including Emile and his dog Glen. The small group was later hit by an Allied aerial bombardment and Emile and Glen were among the dead. Emile and Glen were discovered a few days later - still attached by the dog's lead - and they were buried together at Ranville. His parents Servais and Jessie chose these words as his epitaph, "Had you known our boy you would have loved him too. 'Glen' his paratroop dog was killed with him."
