The seizure of the Cameroonian flagged Russian shadow fleet crude oil tanker SMYRTOV (243.8 m long and 42 m beam) in the English Channel in the early hours this morning night was a thoroughly professional operation. The vessel appears to have been travelling East to West and is presently located off Portland, Dorset. This and other seizures conducted by allies are important in preventing breaches of international maritime law and of sanctions. The timing is significant. Many such vessels have transited our waters without being interdicted, however the Prime Minister, under pressure following the resignations of Healey and Carns, will be keen to demonstrate his robustness and the effectiveness of UK armed forces.
