Seeing the complexity of the books that were read for the comparative writing was also encouraging. Teachers from other districts that observed with us were shocked at the books being used in fourth grade. 🧵

Talking to the teachers they appreciate the structure but also the freedom to bring their art and knowledge to the implementation.

Excited to be at Killam Elementary (@Killamnews ) today for the “Seeing is Believing” showcase event demonstrating the work our teachers and students have been doing as we roll out ARC Core Reading for our 3-5 students. #knowledgematters #readingisacivilright 🧵

Moving on to fifth grade and we see the editing process. We see the teacher model it, but then the students execute it well too. The complexity of language use was encouraging to see. The explicit modeling from the teachers and the JOY the teachers demonstrated … 🧵

I just can’t put it into the proper words. Ironically I state that as there was great focus on vocabulary. 🧵

I wish I could say I am surprised by this, but I am not. I am thankful to see the story shared for more to understand the true intent and true usefulness (uselessness) of the RR data.

Thank you!
Dear letter writers I’ve read your letter to the editor about “Sold a Story,” and honestly ended up confused. I would be grateful for further explanation. I explain my failures to understand your argument in this thread. hechingerreport.org/opinion-…

This. 100% this. I have been mulling a similar response to many of the same issues raised. Over time, Emily’s work has brought out many of the issues that impact a child’s ability to read. This most recent podcast series is narrowly focused on purpose.
I'm seeing a lot of response to Sold a Story and to my work more generally. And I'm seeing something inaccurate being said. It's being said by people who are defending themselves. It's also being said by people who are promoting better instruction based on scientific research. 🧵

Wise for Reading, MA retweeted
A 🧵on the importance of handwriting when learning to read and write: Handwriting letters helps to *create* networks that link sensory and motor systems in the brain, networks that brain imaging research shows will be constantly drawn upon as a literate adult. But… how?

Last night, after years of advocacy and work, I am proud to say the final funding hurdle was jumped with an approval from our Select Board to use money from our ARPA funds to fund a new, comprehensive Literacy Curriculum here in Reading, MA. It is a HUGE step forward for us. 🧵
