If we hope to prevent the collapse of education, we must collectively affirm that the intellectual life is good in itself: that research, study, the reading of great books, enrich the soul. For decades we’ve been told knowledge is for losers, and now we’re reaping the results.

A 10th Century AD, Mammen Axe, a highly decorative iron axe head inlaid with silver and gold, discovered in Denmark. It was found in a wealthy warrior's grave in Mammen, Jutland, dating to around 970–971 AD. The intricate engravings feature a tree motif, possibly symbolizing the Christian Tree of Life or the pagan Yggdrasil, on one side, and a mythical beast on the other. The axe is considered a luxury item and a symbol of status or power, likely owned by a chieftain rather than used for combat. The unique ornamentation is so distinct it established the "Mammen style" of Viking art, characterized by naturalistic animal bodies combined with spiral hip joints.
