A lot of spiritual 'techniques' that get brought up online have this bait & switch aspect to them, promising "this is the secret to fulfilling your desires" and then once yr in deep it's like "actually the secret is we just eliminate your desire, I mean same difference right?"

'overcoming desire for earthly ends' is always framed as this spiritual maturation, when in fact one might abandon their worldly goals for many reasons, a much more common one being cowardice or apathy

Self aware cuteness in art is typically off-putting, and the attempt to remediate by projecting a certain kind of seriousness or 'old-school' mentality is just a more advanced version of this

if you're into lifting weights ppl start asking you to move furniture etc and they'll frame it like they're doing you a favour, "yeah i heard you like this stuff, really you should be paying ME for the opportunity"

even if a theory of self-help is effective in its stated intent, it'll still develop a hatedom that dismisses it on some other grounds: "yes but this won't solve my vague existential malaise/large-scale societal problems/also i saw a meme that made you guys look like dweebs"

in a sense being apathetic & dismissive is a form of self-help: maintaining emotional stability by constantly reinforcing the idea that nothing would work to change your life, and even if it did work it wouldn't ~really~ work

Antagonistic therapy fantasy, wherein one 'pulls one over' on the therapist by successfully presenting a false identity. Still validation seeking, much like intentionally posting in an iconoclastic mode on social media, aiming to demonstrate just how Out of Step they are

Rather than appealing to some institutional or societal Other, one performs for an imagined Higher Self who observes from afar, pleased to see you haven't been shorn of your beloved idiosyncrasies

(sometimes, of course, the iconoclasm is purely visceral - you hate the norm, you hate the institution, you want to yell at it as a form of release)

NaΓ―ve romanticism yearns for the thing which will liberate you from the saturnine constraints of your mundane life - "True Love will set you free" - as opposed to a kind of romanticism that reframes those constraints as the foundation of human flourishing, thus beautifying them

certainly w/in the modern would, Freedom tends to be associated w/ a certain kind of overwhelming intensity that blots out all other concerns - the intensity of falling in love, the intensity of intoxication, the intensity of the gooncave

juxtaposed against a kind of less individually-focused sense of freedom which promises one will eventually master self-discipline in service to The Good, and the satisfaction from achieving this will be far greater than any kind of momentary hedonistic pursuit

there should be a web service where a person can upload an mp3 & get back a recording of it being played over high end speakers in environments w/ interesting natural reverb (garage, warehouse, field, etc)

With career artists you inevitably get releases where it feels either like they're just pandering to expectation, or they're just exploring their interest & don't give a shit about making a cohesive 'statement', and it's up to you to decide which kind of artist you prefer

Don't rly buy it when ppl go all-in on language being the thing that structures consciousness. Feels like something a person who thinks only in words would think. When someone "struggles to put it into words", what's occuring? A thought not yet forced thru the linguistic mesh

One of the (many) problems w/ text feeling more 'objective' is that a lot of shit on here is just chronically miserable ppl going LIFE SUCKS, in a way that would be easily dismissible irl - but in text form, it tricks one into thinking an actual statement is being made
