Cleaning out an estate. You find a strand of pearls in a velvet box labeled "Majorica" or "Mallorca." Real pearls? Fake pearls? Neither, exactly โ€” and that's the interesting part. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Mallorca pearls (also branded "Majorica") are imitation pearls made on the Spanish island of Mallorca since 1890. Each one is a small piece of opaline glass dipped 30-40 times in a coating made from pulverized fish scales (called essence d'orient), polished between coats, and finished with a sealing layer. Not from oysters. But not exactly costume jewelry either. The quality is unmatched among simulated pearls.

Toronto police just seized $3.5 million in counterfeit soccer merchandise โ€” the largest seizure of fake jerseys in Canadian history. Less than two weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 16,000 fake jerseys and flags. Two counterfeit World Cup trophies. Bogus #FIFA, #Nike, #Adidas, and #Puma branding. Two men arrested. The market for fakes is bigger than most fans realize. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Archaeologists in Saudi Arabia just unearthed 100 pieces of gold jewelry. Floral pendants. Necklaces. Beaded discs. Set with colored stones suggesting a vast medieval trade network. They're 1,100 years old โ€” Abbasid Caliphate, the golden age of Islamic science and art. They were buried along the ancient Iraq-to-Mecca pilgrimage route. ๐Ÿ‘‡

The Abbasid period (750โ€“1258 CE) is often called the Islamic Golden Age โ€” when Baghdad was the center of world learning, mathematics, astronomy, and art. The settlement where the cache was found โ€” Diriyah, near the Basran hajj route โ€” was a permanent stop for pilgrims, merchants, and travelers moving between Iraq and Mecca for centuries. Why this elaborate collection was buried and left behind is still a mystery.
