M3, Twilight Calling from TSR, 1986 for the D&D Master Set rules. The module was designed by Tom Moldvay with additional design, development and editing by Bruce Heard, Karen Martin, Rick Swan, Jennell Jaquays, Kevin Stein and Robin Jenkins, with cover art by Ben Otero, and interior art by Larry Elmore and cartography by Diane & Dave Sutherland, Gloria Szopinski and Rob Peacock. The characters must undertake a mission into the plane of nightmares, and to cross seven perilous pocket universes to reach Carnifex Castle. The dark immortal Alphaks continues to gain power and influence for the Sphere of Entropy by tricking the player characters into releasing the ancient evil race of the Carnifex upon the world. They must find seven keys hidden in seven pocket universes to open a final gate to the Pit of Banishment. There the party must fight the Carnifex and prevent the invasion!

When I took over D&D, I had some very specific folks I wanted to bring back to The Table. Today, I had the honor of welcoming these folks back home. Amazing things ahead @JoeManganiello @WeisMargaret @trhickman @Wizards_DnD #dungeonsanddragons

Inktober Day 2 "Weave": "Old fat spider spinning in a tree! Old fat spider can’t see me! Attercop! Attercop! Won't you stop, Stop your spinning and look for me!" --J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Hobbit" The Dungeons & Dragons Ettercap made its monstrous debut in 1981's "Fiend Folio" and was first illustrated by the late, great Russ Nicholson. I had the opportunity to render this spidery critter over a decade later for the "AD&D Monstrous Manual". I've often wanted to create a Monster Manual that was more illustrative to show creatures in their environment or demonstrating a certain skill or activity that they are known for. Anyways for today's entry, I've resurrected my favorite dwarf adventurer, Husky Thunderbolt (from 2019's Inktober entries), who will soon realize what a clever trapper the Ettercap is.πŸ•Έ

At the #GaryCon artist's booth I learned that Larry Elmore was willing to do the covers of the new Dragonlance trilogy but was told that they wanted a digital artist because digital art has more "pop." So instead of a cover like the one on the left we got the one on the right.

I don't understand the mentality. Perhaps it is a lack thereof. Our hobby was created by socially awkward nerds in the 1970s and 1980s. I was a socially awkward demonweed smoking nerd who wore metal t-shirts, had long hair, was good at math, drew comics, & I hung out with all sorts. Out of all the "cliques", gaming nerds were the outcasts of the outsiders so we welcomed everyone who would let us ramble about the adventures of our 5th level whatever or the new fictitious map we'd created or how our group of scrubs defeated Magneto... anyone male, female, gay, straight, mathlete, jock, white, black, purple, stoner, whatever - NO ONE cared... We were just happy as hell to let our imaginations run wild & even happier when more outcasts joined our band of semi-intrepid misfits! I've been in this wonderful hobby since 1980. Until recently, I've never witnessed ANY form of exclusion at any table & I've played & ran games all over the world. Many of us dreamed of meeting one of the creators but we lived nowhere near them. It wouldve been a nerd badge of honor. The recent pattern of attacks & snide comments about those who paved the way for the hobby is just a sign of poor character & has no place in any hobby or anywhere. Its always from hacks who can't create or had to use the creations of those they mock to get into the hobby... only to besmirch them later on social media. To badmouth one upon their death takes a special type of @$$hole. If anyone should be blocked from a table - it is those people. I never knew Ernie or Gary. I know many people who did. I've heard many stories about gaming with them, meeting them at conventions, etc. NOT once did I hear a story of how they were horrible people. Awkward, yes. Racist or cruel? Never. Ernie was at a convention recently when I was hosting tables & the line to get into his panel was out the room & around the hall. I wanted to meet him, but couldnt break away from my table. I heard many stories of those who met him & every story was about what a nice guy he was. RIP Ernie - may you roll nat 20s in the next life. My condolences go out to his family.

For you, Ernest Gary Gygax Jr, a true warrior. The Solamnic Death Chant Return this man to Huma's breast: Let him be lost in sunlight, In the chorus of air where breath is translated; At the sky's border receive him. Beyond the wild, impartial skies Have you set your lodgings, In cantonments of stars, where the sword aspires In an arc of yearning, where we join in singing. Grant to him a warrior's rest. Above our singing, above song itself, May the ages of peace converge in a day, May he dwell in the heart of Paladine. And set the last spark of his eyes In a fixed and holy place Above words and the borrowed land too loved As we recount the ages. Free from the smothering clouds of war As he once rose in infancy, The long world possible and bright before him, Lord Huma, deliver him. Upon the torches of stars Was mapped the immaculate glory of childhood; From that wronged and nestling country, Lord Huma, deliver him. Let the last surge of his breath Perpetuate wine, attar of flowers; From the vanguard of love, the last to surrender, Lord Huma, deliver him. Take refuge in the cradling air From the heart of the sword descending, From the weight of battle on battle; Lord Huma, deliver him. Above the dreams of ravens where His dreams first tried a rest beyond changing, From the yearning for war and the war's ending, Lord Huma, deliver him. Only the hawk remembers death In a late country; from the dusk, From the fade of the senses, we are thankful that you, Lord Huma, deliver him. Then let his shade to Huma rise Out of the body of death, of the husk unraveling; From the lodging of the mind upon nothing, we are thankful to you, Lord Huma, deliver him. Beyond the wild, impartial skies Have you set your lodgings, In cantonments of stars, where the sword aspires In an arc of yearning, where we join in singing. Return this man to Huma's breast Beyond the wild, impartial skies; Grant to him a warrior's rest And set the last spark of his eyes Free from the smothering clouds of wars, Upon the torches of stars. Let the last surge of his breath Take refuge in the cradling air Above the dreams of ravens, where Only the hawk remembers death. Then let his shade to Huma rise, Beyond the wild, impartial skies.

Behold the 1980 map of the Flanaess from the World of Greyhawk Folio! It truly is theMagnum Opus of Darlene the Artist. Most maps were still black and white, & this was just mind boggling to us then! You have to realize, this was done by hand 44 years ago, yet still looks great! #DnD

I've been trying RPG Make MZ lately, I don't really see much improvement over MV. I don't see how it's a completely different version. And after a few years from its release, I don't see as much support from the community as MV had.

Tomorrow will be the first session of my current campaign updated to the new 5.5 #DND rules. I was kind of surprised to see that there was absolutely no complain when I told my players, the response was 100% positive. It was not the same from AD&D 2nd to 3rd edition back then.
