Invitation to the Master Days & Summer Party at CICS @ TH Köln.
#Graduates will present their final #theses. Information stands will focus on new materials and methods in #conservation and present current research projects. Workshops and laboratories will be open to you.
The RiA (conservators in training) is delighted to announce a more permanent collaboration with the youngconservators. From now on we will post somewhat regularly and try different things so please bear with us. We are excited for all that is to come!
„Schadsalze in Objekten des Kultur-und Architekturerbes“ @kartausemauerbach, an international & interdisciplinary audience of #experts spent a week exchanging ideas and discussing the #identification of salts, their harmful effects, sampling and possible measures to reduce #salt

Helen Peters' bachelor thesis @th_koeln invstigated optical brighteners in modern #papers. The consequences of optical brighteners for #paperconservation will be further researched in her master thesis.

Research can be beautiful!
While examining the glue joints in plywood, students at the CICS @th_koeln applied dye to make individual materials more visually distinct. Sometimes, this can lead to fascinating and frankly #beautiful images, when viewed through a #microscope.
ALT A colourful wood cross section. Horizontally oriented wood cells in the top third of the image are dyed in bright cyan and appear almost transparent, while the bottom half of the image shows more cells cut head on in a brown colour. The cavities are filled with shades of blue and cyan. The area between the two strips of wood cells is filled with a transparent, clear and crystalline material, which allow the view into areas beneath the surface.
Do you also sometimes feel watched when working...?
As a conservator you get close to objects and discover beautiful details while examining and working on them, like this beautiful eye!
#funConservators#perspective#BeautyInDetail
ALT Two pairs of text on the left with a close up of an eye on the right. The upper half shows the text “What I see” and next to it a close up shot of the painted eye of a wooden sculpture, enlarged by a magnifying glass. On the bottom half is the text “What the object sees” with a picture of the same magnifying glass, this time with an enlarged human eye looking through it.
Colourful book edges are pretty to look at but can also be dangerous when containing arsenic pigments. In this bachelor thesis, possible treatments were tested on non-arsenic mock-ups. Find out more:

ALT Detail of a person preparing paint by grinding pigment and binding media. The main focus is a hand using a glass muller to grind the green pigment on a white plate. In front of the plate there are several pieces of paper on which the green paint has been applied.
ALT Close up shot of the tile and paint preparation. On the left there is a puddle of bright green paint, on the right there is a brush with green colour on the tip.
ALT A stack of small books with bright green book edges is lying on a table.
Before & after: delicate carved details of an object which has been damaged and severely soiled during the flooding of the #Ahr valley in Germany in 2021. It belongs to a series of #art and #cultural objects that are still undergoing #conservation treatments.
@th_koeln
ALT A wooden arc with carved details is covered with thick deposits of dirt. The surface of the object itself is dark while the dirt has a very light colour and covers large parts of the surface.
ALT The wooden arc after cleaning. The dark surface and delicate carved details are now visible again.
Sometimes you find treasures in trash!
This swing chair was supposed to be discarded because of the broken seat. Instead, it ended up with a conservator who is happy to take care of it.

ALT On the photo you can see a swing chair in the style of thonet seen from the side in front of a white curtain. The seat is broken.
Menthol on #paper - time lapse of the sublimation process. Students at @th_koeln tested different materials that sublimate. They pass directly from the solid to the gaseous aggregate state. That is used in #conservation for various temporary treatments.

A few weeks ago, we gave an insight into the #YoungConservators social media workshop. This has resulted in some great posts that we would like to share with you. In the coming weeks, students from the @th_koeln will share insight into their diverse work. Stay tuned!
ALT The photo of the eye is presented in a PowerPoint presentation. A woman stands next to a laptop for the presentation and another sits in front of it.
This weekend "Restauratoren in Ausbildung“ #conservatorsInTraining from @VDR_Bonn are hosting the annual information event on #conservation study programs.Prospective students can get further information on conservation programs at German universities and the application process
ALT In the left half of the image, the following text is assigned to each of the images: Christmas Cross-section and Conservators Cross-section. The right half shows a cross-section of a Christmas cake (Dominostein) and the cross-section of a paint sample.
The devil is in the detail!
At first sight the punched background of the “Annunciation” seems made of simple dots. Under the microscope however, the punch turns out to have been split in two halves.
Have seen punch marks like these before?

Conservators & objects set in scene - a glimps into today's photo shoot📸
#Conservation students @th_koeln participated in a social media workshop with #YoungConservators.
Besides theoretical input today's focus was on creating aesthetic photos
