Today I discovered a 1903 brochure promoting @theUL’s Chinese collection. It bears the names Professor Wade and Giles, the first two Chinese professors and honorary curators, whose selfless efforts built and preserved our collection, reminding me why safeguarding books matters.

I came across books by 郭沫若 on bronze script, printed in 1930s Japan. Though I often see publishers’ seals on books’ imprint pages, I’ve not come across publishers’ postal stamps before! Do you know whether this is a common practice and how it came about? #ChinaBooks #Japan

Endless Summer in Cambridge is a rare and beautiful essay by Yizhuo Li, our graduate. Blending the lyrical elegance of Kunqu opera with the visual sensibility of painting, Yizhuo captures Cambridge with romance, quiet melancholy, and a touch of rebellion. mp.weixin.qq.com/s/7wkKqIHdK…

The FSN Library preserves a 1761 edition of “Liqi xuan wenji,” compiled by Ji Keyang. Though excluded from “Siku quanshu” for its focus on social engagements such as ceremonial letters, it reflects the Ji family’s local activities and social networks.

On my quest to decipher the seal stamps in the books I work with, I’ve started studying seal script by copying the 說文解字 and have returned to Oracle Bone Script 甲骨文. A few days ago, I came across 丁輔之’s 商卜文集聯, which made studying 甲骨文 really fun! (1/5) #ChinaBooks

I arrived in the UK and in Cambridge four years ago today to begin a new chapter in my life. As I was preparing to move, my professor emailed me, “You’re arriving in the UK during our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend! What an auspicious start!” It was indeed a memorable start.

A visiting card from Hu Shih — leading figure of the New Culture Movement and professor at Peking University — to the last emperor Puyi. On it, Hu Shih wrote: “Today I have a class, so I cannot enter the palace. Please forgive me.” According to historical records, in 1922, Puyi invited Hu Shih to the Forbidden City, where the two talked for twenty minutes.
