Telling a player you are to small to play at top level or you can't because your stats in a injustice to that player without giving that player a chance. You can't measure player heart, motivation and drive unless you see them. We just experienced this with Jalen Brunson!!

As a coach, consider the potential of a 6'4" athletic guard who’s fully dedicated to his craft. He’s a gym rat and fierce competitor, capable of scoring at all three levels when in the right role. Don’t let stats cloud your judgment; his work ethic and mindset are game-changers.

You can't expect community support if you're not investing in the community. When local talent is overlooked, athletes will seek opportunities elsewhere. Building a strong presence locally shows commitment, strengthens relationships, and helps change the culture.

Players—believe in yourself. Confidence comes from preparation and betting on you. Talent should be judged by work ethic, not connections. As a coach, I know my players can hoop. Doubt them? Open the gym, sit back, and watch. Stats never tell the full story. I have that player.

Question, if a guy is playing pick up with your players and he dominating your guys and he is the portal are you concern about his stats then?

You don’t have to be a star to get recruited — but you do have to be a leader. College coaches are clocking your engagement, your energy, and how you treat your teammates on film long before they look at your stat line. Find ways to lead from wherever you are on that roster.

Coaches have a 6'4 guard who can score effortlessly at all three levels. Smooth jump shot and a mid-range game, he’s a threat from anywhere. Defensively, he’s versatile enough to guard anyone. His incredible work ethic sets him apart, and he has two years of eligibility left.

It's not all about stats!! This coach wasnt worried about his stats but was he fit. If you have a player that would be a fit at another program just having someone speak up for them js even better. Great stats don't always make you a fit, sometimes it the opposite.

Question for coaches, if a kid is transferring how much stats and minutes come into play?

I don't understand if you are up by 40 or down by 40 why everyone didn't not get in. These kids bust there butts in practice as well as the ones they get a lot of minutes. Reward them a little by letting get some minutes at least.

Congratulations to all mid majors making noise in the NCAA tournament. For too long they said you had to top 150 to go to top schools. Mid majors are giving kids a chance to show they can compete with the big boys as well. You high school rating or accomplishment means nothing.

Help me understand: you passed on a 6'4 guard who can score at all three levels for one who lacks a consistent jump shot and defensive skills. How are we truly evaluating players in the portal? Open the gym and see them compete

We need to stop using "D1" as an excuse. I attended a game and players jogging back on defense, taking poor shots, and failing to box out or communicate. Being D1 doesn’t equal elite; true elite players embody a mindset and work ethic that goes beyond the label. Its at all levels

Being on a D1 roster doesn't make you a D1 player. Wearing the jersey is one thing; performing is another. If you lack a specific skill set—like shooting, post moves, or defensive rotation—it's tough to compete. Don't overlook players who have those skills.

It’s amusing to see kids focused on dribbling drills for a bag. Instead, they should learn to drive, make smart reads, and play without the ball—just like in the UNC game. Keep it simple and focus on the fundamentals!

Work ethic eliminates fear.
Even Parker Posey’s asking — is football a ploy to sell food? Find out 02.08.26.

Why do some coaches criticize players for leaving when they never planned to develop them? Why should a player stay in a no-win situation? Coaches, be honest with your players from the start. It’s called communication—something we practice every day.

Glad Coach Saben talked the star ranking system. Get a kid that fits your program. Get a kid with good character and a work ethic.
