If you knew how fast you'd be forgot, You wouldn't fight for a spot, In memories brief, we'd all fade out, No lasting fame, no endless shout, Peace lies in being, not in what you've got. Yele Nob 🗞️

The crusade fills the grounds and all seems well, Yet Namugongo is warned before the pilgrims dwell. If risk is the concern, let the standard stay the same, For a crowd is still a crowd, whatever be its name. Consistency, not convenience, gives public trust its flame.

I work, and I earn my pay. I spend, and the money slips away. I struggle through the days in between. I rise again when the pockets run lean. Then I work once more, life's endless routine.

It is amazing how people randomly stop you at a Supermarket, greet you, appreciate what you stand for then ask to pose for photos with you! Our work is not as thankless as we think. These kids then linked me up with their father who is a businessman in the hospitality industry. I have invited him to #InvestInGulu

DP’s @norbertmao said, “If you have people whose only thinking is that Mao got and we didn’t, that is why they are running around making noise,” adding that he has always wished others well even when he was in Cabinet while others were not. He further noted, “I have been insulted for serving as a minister, yet those insulting me are now lobbying for ministerial posts.”#ChimpReportsNews

.@norbertmao : “If you have people whose only thinking is that Mao got and we didn’t, that is why they are running around making noise. There was a time they also got and I wasn’t complaining, and it is from my principle of wishing them well that I ended up in Cabinet.”

NOMINATION - FULL STATEMENT NORBERT MAO FOR SPEAKER Nomination Statement delivered by Hon. Peter Okot, MP Tochi County Monday, May 25, 2026 My Lord The Honourable the Chief Justice, in terms of Rule 5(9) of the Parliamentary Rules of Procedure, I beg to move that the Honourable Norbert Mao, Member of Parliament for Laroo-Pece, do take the of this Parliament as the Speaker. My Lord The Chief Justice, I rise to give a brief background and qualification of the Honourable Norbert Mao. The honourable Norbert Mao was born in 1967 to a mother from Isingiro and a father from Gulu. He spent most of his formative years in Jinja and had most of his secondary education in the central region. That is why he is commonly referred to as Uganda Made Simple. Norbert Mao had a humble childhood in Lacor and Bwobo where he benefitted from the kindness of many, some of them total strangers. As a little boy he herded goats, helped on the farm and worked as a cobbler, bicycle repairer and an apprentice to a tin smith. His Primary school stopped in P6. But on account of his natural brilliance he went on to do his Primary Leaving Examinations at Magwa Primary School, from where he moved on to Wairake College for two years and then went to Namilyango College where he sat for both O and A Level Exams before joining Makerere University. His exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and leadership qualities were recognised early by his peers. While in Primary School and even at Secondary level he participated in many debates and seminars where he excelled on account of the courage, clarity and conviction with which he presented his case. At Makerere University he was elected President of the Students Guild at a time when coming from carried a big stigma. He overcame that stigma and rallied students to champion a campaign against the World Bank inspired policies euphemistically referred to as Structral Adjustment Program but in reality required governments in underdeveloped countries to drastically spending on health, education and livelihoods. The byword for those policies was “cost-sharing”. The fierce disagreements with the government led to a strike in which two students lost their lives and many were seriously injured when the police was deployed on campus on 10th December, 1990. One of those who was severely injured was our late Speaker Jacob Oulanyah. Ever the bridge builder and peacemaker, Norbert Mao reached out to State House and secured an appointment to meet President Museveni receive a student delegation led by Mao to discuss how to balance other national priorities with the need to ensure access to higher education for students from poor families - the so called needy students. At that time Norbert Mao was just 23 years old. That conversation laid the foundation for continued government sponsorship of students in universities alongside private sponsorship. Finally, My Lord the Chief Justice, Honourable Norbert Mao has the education, experience, skills, and connections local and international to unite this House to deal with crisis of confidence facing the members, leaders and the institution of Parliament. Norbert Mao is a Senior Advocate of 32 years standing. He has an undergraduate law degree from Makerere University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre. He has an Associate Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master of Arts Degree in Development Studies from Uganda Martyrs University. He has a Master of Dispute Resolution and a Certificate in International Commercial Arbitration from Pepperdine University, USA. In addition he was a 2003 World Fellow at Yale University, USA. Norbert Mao is the President General of the Democratic Party and until recently Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs in the Government of Uganda having been appointed following a Cooperation Agreement between the National Resistance Movement and the Democratic Party.

In a heated race like that of Speaker, nothing stays quiet and nothing comes easy. What stands out most is resilience under pressure holding firm when everything is loud and uncertain. That kind of boldness, taking the bull by the horns and not backing down, deserves recognition.
Despite the tyranny of numbers that overwhelmed us, we declare that ours was not a numerical challenge but a moral challenge. We took up a fight everyone was cowering from and faced attacks from many quarters including from friends blinded by short term considerations. Many counseled me to throw in the towel fearing the outcome of the ballot. When the counting started, one MP told me that due to strict partisan voting I would be lucky to get ten votes. I put my seat on the line by telling him that if I got less than ten votes I would resign from Parliament. That aside, despite the opposition we faced, the fight was worthwhile. Thanks to the power of outrage fueled by many patriots, Parliament can breathe again. Our collective efforts brought a gush of fresh air in Parliament.

By this decision, @norbertmao has clearly demonstrated that he never sold out the Democratic Party (DP). Had he crossed over to the NRM, he would have won by a comfortable margin, but he chose not to trade his principles for political victory.
