1 Thread on #mpox which is in the news again since a returning traveller was diagnosed in Sweden with a new more dangerous strain which reached Europe for the first time.
In the 2022-23 global outbreak I was clinical advisor to @WHOEurope

Our study identifying phenotypes with different underlying biological features driving ethnicity-associated outcomes in COVID-19 is now online @BJAJournals @JohnProwle @rupert_pearse @Zudin_Psciencedirect.com/science/ar…
8/9 Take home message -> Increased representation of high-risk phenotypes associated with inflammation and catabolism in Black and Asian patients could be driven by baseline differences in health status, reflecting longstanding health inequalities.
Shocking differences. Residents of Barking and Dagenham have the same life expectancy as they did 10 years ago, compared to boroughs like Kensington and Chelsea where improvements have continued until much more recently.

I am running for the ESICM NEXT committee along with fellow clinicians and active researchers @carenzmd@LuigiLaVia7@m_zawadka.
I aim to support early career development of Intensivists, improve diversity and representation, and promote the multi-collaborative work of @ESICM.
Very grateful for this opportunity and all the support I have received. Excited to continue working on eliminating health inequalities and improving outcomes for disadvantaged patient groups.
In the 1st and 2nd waves, local Asian and Black populations experienced between two to four-fold higher rates of hospital admissions expected for their age compared to White populations.
This confirms the need to better understand lived experiences & the structural factors that drive ethnic disparities, through community based participatory research that informs community led-interventions.
