Just spoke to a civil engineering expert. The #Keybridge was a three-span, continuous steel truss bridge. Support was spread out evenly along the three piers. This is a common, efficient design. The bridge "couldn’t have been expected to withstand" losing a pier, she said.
The #Keybridge collapsed in #baltimore this morning, and crews still are searching for at least seven people in the frigid Patapsco River.
Officials also confirmed workers were performing concrete work on the bridge at the time of the collapse.

The Key Bridge is a major span in the area, connecting with I-695. But it's also a symbol of the state. It bears the name of Francis Scott Key, who penned the National Anthem nearby during the War of 1812, a point of pride for Marylanders.

The collapse also comes 2 days after the bridge's 47-year anniversary and 1 day after Maryland Day. In addition to the immediate tragedy, the loss of the span will also certainly have lingering impacts on traffic flow through the region and in the harbor.
