dang it is complicated to build an efficient, lockless, quarantined linked list using compare-and-swap and it would be easy using load-linked/store-conditional. Weren't there some science papers decades ago proving those two are equivalent? Well if so I'm calling bullshit.

I guess the equivalence is that you can always implement LL/SC with CAS plus a counter, right? Well I've been struggling without success to fit such counters into my data structure.

If Intel and AMD had implemented LL/SC a decade ago, I would be done with this part. 😭

Heartening to see.
The cloud rebellion against labs. Microsoft is positioning as the neutral stateful aggregation layer for models. In tone, it is positioning pro-businesses building on top, whereas ai labs have self positioned as “intelligence eating everything”. Microsoft’s position rings true from its track record. The other clouds will adopt this product positioning as well (bedrock has for some time). It’s good to see multiple mega corps competing it can be an antidote to vertical integration. We need open networks to win in order to maximize individual agency post AGI.

Be skeptical of millenarians. Meaning, people who believe that 1. the world is ending soon and 2. they have unique moral insight about the upcoming Event. The EAs are millenarian, but there have been many others before.

While everyone is discoursing about what a "trillion dollars" means, take a moment to remember that time the United States spent $1.2 trillion for an "infrastructure bill" in order to build all this new and improved infrastructure we're surely now enjoying.

How $2.1M got drained from Aztec Connect: - Aztec Connect was a privacy based zkRollup on Ethereum - Aztec Labs shut it down in 2023 to focus on newer tech - Users were given over a year to withdraw their funds - In 2024, Aztec gave up control of the system and removed admin access - The contracts became fully immutable and could no longer be upgraded or paused - Around $2.1M in assets remained locked up inside old smart contracts - An attacker found a way to exploit the public rollup processing function The exploit drained: • 909 $ETH • 270K $DAI • 167 $wstETH • Other assets - Total losses exceeded $2.1M - The attacker funded the wallet using Tornado Cash before the exploit - Current users were not affected - The incident is another reminder that abandoned DeFi contracts can still become targets years later Attacker: 0x0F18D8b44a740272f0be4d08338d2b165b7EdD17

Fable was the best model I have ever run for zk-autoresearch. Best quality out of ~500 iterations. Never triggered the safety check once on cryptography research. Its first iteration reinvented a known PCS construction from first principles, without reading the papers. It just reasoned its way there. 72 hours later the US government pulled it. Export controls. I'm in Budapest, so if maintained I lose access to the best tool for zk-autoresearch. This is the AI arms race moving from papers to policy. If export controls hold, the research community splits in half. Open research that was becoming accessible through LLMs slows down overnight. The alarmism-as-marketing crowd should take a hard look at this. They gave the government the perfect ground for exactly this outcome.
