Video Game History Lesson-
Many people actually liked Wind Waker on launch even though many did initially complain when the game was first shown and announced.
Nintendo led us to believe we were getting a very detailed and DARK Zelda. They teased several times, a visual direction that was very mature, specific and impressive. This felt like a natural progression from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. Basically, the initial reveal of Wind Waker was a massive failure because of the hype Nintendo built up. By the time the game was released, however, many people had changed their minds. Sales were still kind of low, not just because of the expectation of the darker Zelda game that Nintendo teased and never launched, but also because Game Cube as a system wasn't performing that well. Game Cube was fighting an uphill battle against the perception that the console was for kids. By 2002, Nintendo hadn't even broken half a million Game Cubes sold in America. The PS2 was outperforming due to their strong third party support and more mature games for gamers that were growing up. Despite Game Cube underperforming as a console, and Nintendo rug pulling a darker Zelda game to deliver a cartoony one... the game actually still managed to sell almost 5 million copies. ( still under Ocarina of Time's 7.6 mill )
By 2003- nearly HALF of Game Cube owners had bought Wind Waker.
